Any of you guys own a Mossberg 500 in .410 gauge?

I'm thinking about buying my 13 year old one and was wondering if it will serve him well?

He's been bugging the crap out of me to take him dove hunting and he's perturbed that he doesn't have one yet since I told him I got my first shotty when I was 12.

So, what say you, good buy or no?

I don't know about the Mossy, but I have a Remington 870 in 410. It's one of my favorite shotguns. I've even taken a turkey with it! Length of pull on mine is around 14 inches. It would take a fairly large 13 year old to shoulder it properly. You may want to check the length of pull on the Mossberg.

Good point, I figured I'd take him with me when I bought it (if I do), he's almost as tall as me these days so I'm thinking it should work.

I agree strongly with flinter. Length of pull might be a tad long. And that would be frustrating for him.

You could get the 500 and order another stock and cut it down to his size. Then, when he gets bigger, put the original one back on. I don't think 500 stocks are very expensive.

That's a thought, yeah they shouldn't cost much, they look to be birch or maybe beech.

nah get em a full size 12ga with reduced 2.3/4 thats how I started my boy ... but he is a bigger kid .....but hell take him out and let him crack off a few with a 12 !

Well, that's cool, and my first shotgun was a 12 gauge, but I've been wanting one anyway, plus his mom can shoot it. A .410 is a neat little gun to have. Kinda like if you own a 223, it's still nice to have a few .22's around. Also a .410 is great to get him started with because he won't get a sore shoulder if he shoots it all day.

I had a Mossberg .410 w/ a vent rib yrs. ago. I bought it since it wouldn't sell at the local shop. I used it with my 12 GA dove hunting for a couple seasons.
I liked it and after my son got old enough, I gave it to him.

It's a sweet shooting shotty, and I think your son will like it.

Mossberg makes a shorter "bantam" length stock for the 500. I bought a 20 gauge 500 for my wife with this shorter stock.
