I'll have to disagree with you on that. He posted too many threads that were clearly designed to make fun of religion in general and Christians in particular....all the while bemoaning that religous people were too pushy in spreading their beliefs.

Also, he is a "little marxist" and that is the threat of of free individuals everywhere. I don't miss him a bit.

The only one I do sorta miss is Peacemaker...even tho I did pick on him..and did tire of his religous lessons. But at least he did not make fun of anyone that i recall...and he didn't espouse theories to take away individual freedoms.

Joey was an intelligent guy who (boo-hoo) dared to stand up to those who harassed him.

Peacemaker came back, admitted his mistakes and as far as I could see was a LOT more grown up that he was before. Yet the dominant clique harassed him incessantly and he ended up leaving.

Personally I am on here less and less, it is usually pointless to make a long thread, or serious argument, as there is either no one here to read it, no one who will seriously respond to it, which only leaves people who will post up a nutshot smiliey and make a one line jab at the poster, not the post.

The question is to bother to fight it, or to just come less and less until I eventually stop bothering.

Naturally someone, probably several someones, will tell me to leave, call this a meltdown, or whatever. But just looking at it honestly, the conversation here is at an all time low, there is very little community spirit, and intelligent debate is a nearly forgotten memory.

I do not say these things to single out or attack certain members, but because it really is sad to see this happening to a place I loved. This place was like a favorite bar or coffee shop, a place where people could gather and chat.

Some of the newer members are/were great guys, and I see them post less and less.

Broondog was a member of the old board but came on just a few months before it shut down. That guy donated something like $750 in one chunk to help keep the board running. I watched him get treated like crap and see him less and less on here.

Another really sad example is Old Grump, what a great guy, lots of jokes, would put in the time to discuss things, was well on his way to being a major part of the board. But it is less and less jokes from him now, less and less discussion.

Sorry to single you two out, and maybe you don't feel the way I am talking about, but both of you are posting less and less, and I am guessing the reason is it just is not as fun anymore.

At any rate, it is up to us in the end, will we actively work to make this a better board or will we all just eventually stop coming? I guess time will tell.

I get you were not here when the board was at its height, so you do not have a good comparison, but many of us loved this board, truly cared about it. Sure, there were always some folks who got picked on, some good natured, some not as much. But the real difference is people did not do it in a way that killed conversation.

And frankly Jefferson, that is exactly what you do. You personally have ruined more potentially good threads than anyone I can think of, from over the better part of the last decade.

LAGC seriously tried to improve the board, he posted interesting threads, he attempted to get conversations rolling.

I really do not understand why you come to this part of the board, its called general discussion, and you obviously do not like to DISCUSS things.

Please, look back over many of the threads here and ask yourself if you honestly added to the conversation or simply cut it off, belittled people, and generally made the place as unwelcoming as you possibly could.

Membership is down here for a number of reasons. I don't agree with the whole "bullying" theory about a handful of members driving others away. Flaming and arguements have been a part of GD as long as I've been a member.

I've taken the liberty of copying from a thread I started last month, my 2 cents on why activity has dropped so much here:

I've been a member here since 2004 or thereabouts. This site used to be the most kickass firearms and GD dicussion spot on the 'net, bar none.

Over the course of the last year or two, the membership has shrunken to an all-time low, at least during my stay. I know part of that was due to GN being down for a number of months the other year, for whatever reason.

I know for a fact though...that a lot of the membership loss has been due to the invasion by a relatively small number of people whose only goal here is to incite and inflame other members, and start otherwise good and informative threads into flamefests & sh*t-storms. Long-time members have gotten sick of it, and gone off to join various other gunboards.

I've noticed something that virtually all of these "members" have in common:

Non-Paying membership

Infantile, grade-school type user names

Rarely (if EVER) post in any other board besides GD. In other words, nothing in the gun boards.

Repeatedly put up transparently inciteful, baiting replies that have little or NOTHING to due with the thread's subject.

When called on their trolling, go whining to the Mods about how their 1st Amendment "rights" are being violated here.

The question is who these small number of people are.

You can try to blame the Joey types, but they have no real influence on the board, and in fact when he did step out of line he was kicked.

I get you are probably talking about me as well, but I remain calm, polite, willing to discuss matters in depth, do not engage in name calling, etc.

The real people who incite things into flamefests are not the LAGCs or Joeys who post up a provocative topic, it is the people who respond so incredibly poorly to those topics, who turn it into name calling, who actually drag it down.

If a Joey type posts a provocative topic then the best response is to either ignore it or say "Here is why I think you are wrong..reasons 1,2,3, etc".

But when the first reply is "Go fuck yourself, Kill yourself you commie DU asshat" that is when the conversation goes downhill, and fast.

It's not the Joey, with his what, maybe 100 posts, that is the problem, it's the folks who go way over the top in responding to them.

And frankly, that is usually Jefferson. I'm not saying this to be a jackass, but because it is the truth.

I'm trying to discuss the actual problem here, this isn't a butt hurt rant.

But yes we are losing members to poor behaviour, and I am one of the long term members who is sick of the flamefests, but I also see rather clearly who is actually starting the flamefests.
