Post Cleaning the Inside of the Lower Handguard.

I have a Norinco Underfolder, with the standard light Colored Chu Wood Laqured Handguard's. The Inside of the Lower Handguard get's Dirty after Firing. What is the best way to clean the Inside of the Wood with out Damaging it? I always get that dark Cordite stain off the back of the Inside it seem's to only happen at the back of the Lower Handguard.

Are you removing it from the weapon to clean or trying to do it in place? Some Hoppe's on a bit of rag usually cleans off surface residue easily enough.
