    The List

Been collecting this info off the internet for years. Some is mine but much of it is info I found from other people and it was better than I could do. lol

    DISASTER EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES

Before just jumping on the list and starting to buy your supplies, read the entire list to help with your selection of equipment/supplies.This will also explain how to keep track of your supplies and just drops in some good tips to help you survive. These tips/suggestions are in no particular order and are sometimes repeated.

Place a "✔" in the box after an item is secured and properly stored.
Place a "X" in the box if an item is being eliminated item from inventory.
Place a AG@ in the box after an item is secured/stored and if item is classified for Group inventory.

Always keep this list available in printed form. It can help with inventory before, during, and after a disaster.

Notice there is no ATable of Contents@. You should know this list (or any other you devise) well enough to find the information without one.

REMEMBER: K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple, Stupid!

All quantities are a suggestion. Amounts are up to the individual(s) or group but less should not be stored. More can be stored if able. All quantities should be at least double when possible. Also, this is not a Afixed@ list of quantities or items and is for someone in a static position. List contains more equipment than can be taken on foot or in a vehicle. New items can be included or existing items deleted if you feel the need. Environment will/can determine what and how much. If it can break, wear out, or get used up, always have a backup. Essentially, this means have a backup for everything. Do not count on this list to have everything. Mistakes can be made and items forgotten.

Household items (dishes, silverware, drinking glasses/cups, pots, pans, sheets, pillows, etc.) are just some of the things you should already have and are not on this list.

Remember: It is a good idea to have more than you need. In a disaster scenario, it will be good planning to have barter items and it will be difficult or impossible to replace worn/damaged/lost/missing/stolen items. Let=s face it, paper money won=t be Aworth the paper it=s printed on@ and coins don=t have enough (if any) gold and silver in them to be worth anything.

    Basic criteria for barter items:
    High consumer demand or value
    Not easily home manufactured
    Durable in storage
    Divisible in small quantities
You can afford to part with it or have a large surplus of the item.

Excellent barter items include (but not limited to):

1)Almost any item on this list
    2)Precious Metals/Gems
    3)Jewelry
    4)Alcoholic Beverages
    5)Clothing - All types
    6)Female items Hygiene/Cloths
    7)Children=s items - Cloths/Toys
    8)Candy/Sweets/Treats
    9)Weapons & Ammunition
    10) Medical/Hygiene Supplies/Skills
    11) Labor [do what someone else can’t]
    12) Paper/Pens/Pencils
    13) Fuel
    14) Blankets
    15) Flavored and/or Caffeine drinks
    16) Tobacco Products
    17) Mechanical‑Gadgetry/Machine/Auto Parts
    18) Fresh Fruits/Vegetable/Meats
    19) Tools
    20) Seeds/Sprouts/Bulbs
    21) Tea/Coffee

Weapons, Ammunition, medical supplies, and other items should only be bartered with when you have no choice or items, such as obsolete ammunition or ammunition you have no weapon for, that you can part with and not miss. Remember, if you have enough ammunition and weapons, all other items are obtainable. Don=t barter with any item you cannot part with. Don=t barter with the last of any of you items.

All paper items, electronic items, and other items that are not WATERPROOF, should be sealed in some form of waterproof container.

DO NOT store batteries in radios, flashlights, etc. Corrosion may occur and result in damage of your equipment.

If you have a choice of a battery operated device or a device that does not use batteries (i.e. GPS or compass, digital or windup/solar/kinetic watch, etc.), choose one that does not use batteries. Substituting high tech gear for skill and knowledge will only cause problems in the long run.

Knowledge and preparation are the keys to survival in the event of a catastrophe. Remember... knowledge is power and preparation is the difference between life and death. Learn the skills necessary to use all of the equipment in this list.

British SAS "Seven P's" Rule - Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance

DO NOT keep all your magazines loaded. This will fatigue the spring and cause feed failures and jams. Keep, at most, a of magazine inventory loaded and rotate every 3 months. Download your magazines a few rounds. If your magazines hold 30 rounds, only load 25 rounds. This will help save the spring. The more magazines you have, the less chance of the springs becoming fatigued. This may or may not be a myth. Many Aexperts@ can and will provide compelling arguments for both sides. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.

Always drink plenty of water. Dehydration can affect your ability to work, fight, and think. Remember to hydrate yourself!!!! DO NOT drink alcoholic beverages (liquor, beer, etc.) to stay hydrated. Alcohol will dehydrate you even more.

DO NOT store chemicals and fuel in proximity to food or water. Cross contamination can result making food or water unusable.

Boiling water may be effective, but it is not the best way to purify water. Boiling does not always kill or remove certain contaminants and removes the oxygen content and causes it to be flat. For EMERGENCY purposes only, one can use un‑scented household bleach to purify water, but you should use only 2 teaspoon per 5 gallons of water (1 tsp should the water be cloudy). The best method is to use HTH7dry chlorine (65%), which can be purchased in bulk at stores like Wal-Mart7, Target7, K-Mart7, and pool supply stores. (Also a great barter item.) The amount to use is 1/4 teaspoon (0.03 ounce) per 300 gallons for a 0.5-ppm of chlorine.

    THE RULE OF 3
    Humans can survive for…
…3 seconds from lack of blood
…3 minutes from lack of air
…3 hours from hypothermia or heat stroke.
…3 days from lack of water
…3 weeks from lack of food
…3 months from lack of adequate shelter
…3 years from poor diet, vitamin deficiency, despair, chronic illness

Large flashlights are impractical for personal carry. Big C-Cell or D-Cell Maglites7 or large spotlights are heavier than necessary and should be used at the base only. Mini Maglite7, SurefireJ (standard and LED), and InovaJ LED flashlights are excellent. USGI angle head flashlights are about as big as it should get. Lithium batteries, such as the SurefireJ 123A type have a shelf life of about 10 years. They don=t last long when used but store well. If you use these, make sure to have a large quantity. DO NOT forget to stock replacement bulbs. Also, remember to observe light discipline in dangerous/combat situations.

    FAMILY IDEAS...
Identify two meeting places: One near or at home and the second away from the neighborhood in case home cannot be approached.

Keep photo=s of your family with you at all times. It may be helpful in locating them after a disaster.

All adults and teenage children should be taught 1st Aid and CPR. This can be the difference between life and death. Be prepared to teach these skills to younger children as they become old enough to handle it.

REMEMBER THE CHILDREN! If you have children, especially small ones, remember their favorite toys. Children need a sense of normality or as close as one can get in a survival situation. Celebrate Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, and other holidays with them. They need all the comfort and love you can give. This will be tougher on them than on any adult. We understand...they don=t! Don=t take any more chances than you have to, either. They cannot survive without you! Assure them that everything is OK but don=t lie to them. They will know.

If you have children, make sure to include Children=s Chewable Vitamins in the vitamins pack. It is easier to get children to take these types over Adult vitamins.

Make sure that all survival equipment for a child is sized for a child. An adult gasmask will not function properly on a child. The best for this is the Israeli Child sized civilian gasmask. Keep in mind your child will grow. Have a few sizes larger of clothing and equipment stored in the event it turns out to be and Aextended@ situation.

Don't underestimate the supplies you will need to keep a child safe and happy. These needs will change as the child grows.

Pack a few games that DO NOT require batteries. Although not on the list, these are essential for morale of everyone. This can help pass the time and have something fun for the children. It’s a good idea to have a AKids Activity Survival Kit@. You may have to leave your house during a disaster and may sleep somewhere else for a while. It=s smart to put together your child=s own AKid=s Activity Survival Kit@ so they will have things to do and share with other kids. These can all be stored in a backpack or duffel bag. Just make sure they can carry it easily so they can feel as if they are making a significant contribution. Some suggested items for your Activity Survival Kit are:

    1. A few of their favorite books
    2. Crayons, pencils or marking pens and plenty of paper
    3. Scissors and glue and plenty of paper
    4. Two favorite toys such as a doll or action figure
    5. One or two board games
    6. A deck of cards
    7. Puzzles
    8. Small people figures and play vehicles.
    9. Favorite stuffed animal or puppet
    10. Favorite blanket or pillow
    11. Pictures of the family and pet
    12. A "keepsake" box with a few treasures that make them feel special. (Allow them to choose these items)

Check on the school emergency plan of any school‑age children you may have. You need to know if they will keep children at school until a parent or designated adult can pick them up, send them home on their own, or take them to a shelter. Be sure that the school has updated information about how to reach parents and responsible caregivers to arrange for pickup. Ask what type of authorization the school may require to release a child to someone you designate if you are not able to pick up your child. During times of emergency, the school telephones may be overwhelmed with calls. Don=t phone...GO THERE!

If you have pets, remember to include supplies for them. Food, grooming, and medical supplies will be in short supply. Be aware of your animals’ condition at all times. Rabies is very deadly to humans when treatment is unavailable.

Candy is an excellent moral booster. Avoid soft candy [chocolate bars, etc.] as they do not keep well. Store hard candy as it keeps well. Make sure it is sealed in an air/water tight container to keep it fresh and free from pests. Children will especially benefit from this.

If you live near a body of water (lake, pond, river, creek, etc.), know the maximum flood level. You will need to know where you will be able to travel and where the water will be too high. For rivers below a dam, you local authorities should have a map and/or written contingency plan concerning dam failure you can get...or at least see. When planning, avoid having your residence in the flood zone.

If you have to travel, have knowledge of several routes to your destination. Some of the ways may be blocked or otherwise inaccessible. Have a map in your possession at all times. This may be the only way to plan your route.

Understand that consumable goods (soaps, deodorants, feminine products, shampoos, toothpastes, etc.) will be depleted over time with little or no chance of re-supply. Pack plenty and prepare alternatives.

Scavenge from the dead! [Only after a survival situation is in effect!] This seems distasteful but is necessary. No, this is not grave robbing. It is a fairly safe way to replenish or find needed items. Be sure to take the necessary biological precautions and use common sense. Clothing should be thoroughly washed before you wear it. DO NOT ingest opened food, opened medical supplies or ANY water from the dead. Any items found to be or may be contaminated in any way...BURN IT! You don=t know what killed them.

Hygiene is very important! Bathe as often as possible (once a day if practical), even if it=s only water. It is good for health and morale. Be aware of lice, ticks, bedbugs, and other infestations. They CAN/WILL kill you over time. Treat and wash clothing and other items regularly. Do not eliminate lice treatment. In time, you will get lice!

Even after a few days in the field, the human sense of smell, sight, and hearing become quite acute. Lack of bathing or strong scents (soaps, deodorants, colognes, etc.) will give away your position to the enemy or animals (prey and/or predatory). Avoid them!!! This is only relevant in a combat scenario. Unless in combat, do everything you can to stay clean.

Remember sound discipline...if it rattles...tape it.

Remember camouflage discipline...if it shines...cover it.

Your feet are important ‑ ask any infantryman and he'll tell you ‑ "TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET"

Keep your feet dry. Feet that stay wet will eventually develop Atrench foot@ or Ajungle rot@. This can turn gangrene and kill you or, at the least, be the need for amputation. If you require amputation in a disaster situation, you=re going to die. Be careful not to allow your feet to get frostbite. This will turn gangrene also.

Take Care of your boots. Waterproof them the minute you take them home from the store. Don't use the synthetic spray stuff. Leather really hates that. Use something like Mink Oil (KiwiJ) or order 'Bjørnefett'(name translates to 'bear fat') from Norway, Sweden or Finland ‑ it really waterproofs. Reapply waterproofing if you've been trekking/in combat for several 'wet' days. Polish them every time you use them, without exception.

Your head, hands, and feet are the "radiators" of your body. If they are warm, you'll be warm. If they are cold, you=ll be cold. Wear a hat in cold weather. Up to 50% of your body heat is lost through your head.

In all items, avoid goose down or feather products of any kind. If its gets wet, you will freeze. If you freeze, you will die. Always choose wool, Gor-texJ or some form of poly-fill over down.

When you have a choice between wool or synthetics for sweaters and hats, choose wool. Wool will keep you warm even when wet. Be aware that some people are allergic to wool and other natural fibers. Find out before you need them if you/they are. Substitute synthetic materials if you are allergic.

Be aware of all allergies you and your family may have. It will do you no good to stock up on something and then not be able to use it due to an allergic reaction.

Growing your own food may be necessary. It is likely that food supplies will be down and those who have it will charge exorbitant prices for food, especially fresh vegetables and meats. Growing food is no easy task.

Reading up on and practicing farming and animal husbandry is advised.

Personal organization is crucial for survival. You must know exactly where you are, where your allies are, where your enemies are, and where each and every single bit of your gear is at all times.

With regards to medical procedure and remedies, there are some types of natural and/or organic treatments that may work similar to or better than conventional treatments. Currently, there are several publications that address these issues. It would be beneficial to explore the alternate possibilities these treatments offer. There are no guarantees that these Aherbal@ remedies will work but in some cases due to federal, state, or local regulations, these may be the ONLY option. Remember... when out of options, sometimes the improbable or ridiculous should be attempted.

Know your climate! It will do no good to pack items that will be useless or fail to pack necessary items for your particular climate.

    Survival requires:
    1. Will to survive and a proper mental attitude
    2. Physical fitness
    3. Knowledge and skills
    4. Tools and supplies

    Deal with it...
Fear ‑For anyone faced with an emergency situation, fear is a normal reaction. Unless an emergency situation has been anticipated, fear is generally followed by panic then pain, cold, thirst, hunger, fatigue, boredom and loneliness. It is extremely important to calmly assess the situation and not allow these seven enemies to interfere with your survival.

Pain ‑ Pain may often be ignored in a panic situation. Remember to deal with injuries ASAP before they become even more serious.

Cold ‑Cold lowers the ability to think, numbing the body and reducing the will to survive. Never allow yourself to stop moving or to fall asleep unless adequately sheltered.

Thirst ‑ Dehydration is a common enemy in an emergency situation and must not be ignored. It can dull your mind, causing you to overlook important survival information.

Hunger ‑Hunger is dangerous. It may reduce your ability to think logically and increase your susceptibility to the effects of cold, pain and fear.

Fatigue ‑ Fatigue is unavoidable in any situation so it is best to keep in mind that it can and will lower your mental ability. Remember that in an emergency situation this is often the body’s way of escaping a difficult situation.

Boredom & Loneliness ‑These enemies are quite often unanticipated and may lower the mind's ability to deal with the situation.

    Remember the acronym S.T.O.P. ' Sit - Think - Observe - Plan.

Sit: Sit down (only when there is no immediate threat) and collect your thoughts. Don’t panic.

Think: What do I have at my disposal both physical and mental that can help me in this situation? Take an inventory of your survival kit items and how you will use them. Take an inventory of your mind; remember what you always thought you would do if the worst happened. Most of all, remain positive, you will survive.

Observe: Take a good look at your environment and everything going on around you. Orient yourself to your surroundings. Is there shelter, water, and/or high ground? What are the pro=s and con=s of your environment?

Plan: Now create your plan of action. Be positive and take care of yourself. If it is late in the day and you are not at your planned A.O., find or make a shelter against the weather, and most of all remain positive, you do have the ability to survive. You have conquered the major danger of not allowing panic to cast your fate; you can now conquer anything else that confronts you.

Use common sense. If you are lost, try to get your bearings before moving on. If you're tired, get rest. If you're hungry, get food. If you=re cold… get warm.

All items should be inspected every 1 to 2 months to ensure freshness and/or proper condition. Anything spoiled, out of date, damaged, or no longer in working order should be replaced. Check foodstuffs for contamination of any kind. Improperly stored food could be susceptible to bugs and other pests. Keep maintenance up to date on vehicles, weapons, and other mechanical or electronic items. Keep a record for each item regarding maintenance dates and action taken.

Be sure to keep all manuals and instructions with their respective gear. It does no good to have a GPS or radio and not know how to use it.

A word of caution ‑ Don=t try to buy everything you need at once. Unless you're rich, it will hurt you economically and thereby lower your morale and willingness to prepare.

Nature (and the enemy) can be unforgiving. You must be prepared to fight to survive.

Take AHow To@ classes. Many organizations such as the YMCA7, Red Cross7, local Rescue Squads/Fire Departments, and civic clubs, will offer 1st Aid and rescue classes. They are usually free or very low cost. Take them! Many of these organizations offer handbooks [the Red Cross7 offers several] and/or brochures. These are of little or no cost. Get them! Knowledge is the power to survive.

Always make sure that someone knows where you are going and when you're planning to come back. If something goes wrong, they will know where to find you.

Do your homework before going on a trip C know the basic geography of your destination and familiarize yourself with edible flora and fauna. Also, be prepared for the environments you're heading into C bring the right tools and supplies.

When using cold-weather clothing, remember the acronym C-O-L-D:

    Keep it… Clean
    Avoid… Overheating
    Wear it in… Layers
    Keep it… Dry

There are a few things to remember about training...

    1. Train hard
    2. Train often.
    3. Train right.
    4. Train as you fight, fight as you train.

Survival is easier and safer when you go unnoticed. Don=t talk about what you are doing, not doing, or stocking up on. Telling people about what you have before a disaster will bring them to you after a disaster because they haven=t prepared.

After a disaster occurs, try to make it look like you have nothing. Keep it hidden and don=t let strangers into you group/home. You cannot trust anyone outside your group. Treat all people outside your group as if they are going to cause harm and take what you have.

KNOW YOUR WEAPONS!!!!! It will do you no good to have a weapon you can=t clean or fix. Don=t rely on someone else. They may not be there when you need them. Learn to clean it! Learn to fix it!

Build Your Food Storage On Only $5 a Week

List of $5 food items that you can purchase each week for a year to build up your food storage for you and someone else. Some of the food costs may have changed; the general concept and estimate should still be worth your while.

Here's the list of what to buy each week:

    Week 01 6 lbs salt
Week 02 5 cans cream of chicken soup
Week 03 20 lbs of sugar
Week 04 8 cans tomato soup
    Week 05 50 lbs wheat
    Week 06 6 lbs macaroni
    Week 07 20 lbs sugar
    Week 08 8 cans tuna
    Week 09 6 lbs yeast
    Week 10 50 lbs wheat
Week 11 8 cans tomato soup
    Week 12 20 lbs sugar
Week 13 10 lbs powdered milk
    Week 14 7 boxes macaroni & cheese
    Week 15 50 lbs wheat
Week 16 5 cans cream of chicken soup
    Week 17 1 bottle 500 multi-vitamins
Week 18 10 lbs powdered milk
Week 19 5 cans cream of mushroom soup
    Week 20 50 lbs wheat
Week 21 8 cans tomato soup
    Week 22 20 lbs sugar
    Week 23 8 cans tuna
    Week 24 6 lbs shortening
    Week 25 50 lbs wheat
    Week 26 5 lbs honey
Week 27 10 lbs powdered milk
    Week 28 20 lbs sugar
Week 29 5 lbs peanut butter
    Week 30 50 lbs wheat
    Week 31 7 boxes macaroni & cheese
Week 32 10 lbs powdered milk
    Week 33 1 bottle 500 aspirin
Week 34 5 cans cream of chicken soup
    Week 35 50 lbs wheat
    Week 36 7 boxes macaroni & cheese
    Week 37 6 lbs salt
    Week 38 20 lbs sugar
Week 39 8 cans tomato soup
    Week 40 50 lbs wheat
Week 41 5 cans cream of chicken soup
    Week 42 20 lbs sugar
    Week 43 1 bottle 500 multi-vitamins
    Week 44 8 cans tuna
    Week 45 50 lbs wheat
    Week 46 6 lbs macaroni
    Week 47 20 lbs sugar
Week 48 5 cans cream of mushroom soup
    Week 49 5 lbs honey
    Week 50 20 lbs sugar
Week 51 8 cans tomato soup
    Week 52 50 lbs wheat

Some weeks, you will have leftover change. Instead of spending it, put aside the change each week to be used for the weeks you may need more than $5 (like for wheat, milk, etc). Also be sure to lookout for sales. This way you can jump ahead and cross items off the list where there are great bargains.

After you have completed this list, you will end up with:
    500 lbs of wheat
    180 lbs of sugar
    40 lbs of powdered milk
    12 lbs of salt
    10 lbs of honey
    5 lbs of peanut butter
    45 cans of tomato soup
15 cans of cream of mushroom soup
15 cans of cream of chicken soup
    24 cans of tuna
21 boxes of macaroni & cheese
    500 aspirin
    1000 multi‑vitamins
    6 lbs of yeast
    6 lbs of shortening
    12 lbs of macaroni

This amount of food has around 1,249,329 calories which based on a 2000 calorie a day diet will provide enough food for two people for 312 days! That's almost one whole year for two people on $5 a week! Even if the price was double that, at $10 a week you're only paying around $40/month in grocery bills. Try to beat that.

    FOOTNOTES

    1. Minimum one per group. Everybody should have at least one but one per group will suffice if no other alternative.

    2. Up to individual(s) what contents are required and how much. Gender and age may be a determining factor as to what is stored [i.e.-toilet paper, towels, washcloth, shaving kit, tooth care, soap (unscented), feminine hygiene products, skin care, deodorant (unscented), etc.]. Be thorough! These are very important items in relation to morale and health. Pack plenty of these items. Once they are gone, there will be no more.

    3. When possible or practical, equipment should be military [foreign or domestic] issue camouflage or an appropriate color to enhance concealment in chosen environment [i.e. - Desert = Tan/Desert Camouflage, Forest = Woodland/DPM/Olive Drab, Snow = White/Snow Camouflage]. Bright colors [i.e.-blaze orange/yellow] are for signaling.

    4. Rifle should be of current military style, magazine fed, and of modern caliber (ex. AR-15, FN-FAL, AK-47, SKS, AR-180, HK91, etc). Shotgun should be pump or semi-auto. Extended magazine tubes or detachable magazines (Saiga 12®) are preferable. Single shot or double barrel is impractical and unwise. Caliber should be of 12 Gauge and ammunition should be #4 Buckshot. 0 Buck or 00 Buck can be used but #4 is best. 000 Buck should be stocked as last resort. Slugs can be useful in limited situation and should not exceed ¼ of the total round count. Birdshot can also be stocked for hunting purposes in addition to Buckshot. It is a good idea for the group to have at least one shotgun. It may be necessary for the group leader to designate one individual to be responsible for procurement of a shotgun. Bolt Action for individual(s) in Sniper roll only unless no other choice. If optics are desired, non-electronic type or tritium powered should be used. If NV is desired, include batteries. There is no recommended preference as to an Auto Pistol or a Revolver. Handgun should be of 9mm/.38 caliber or larger and of modern caliber. Avoid obsolete, rare, or larger calibers (like the .44 Magnum, .50 Beowulf, .500 S&W, etc.) These will be overly expensive causing unnecessary expense and next to impossible to get in a disaster scenario. Also, each group should have one .22 cal rifle such as the Ruger™ 10/22, Springfield Armory™ M6 Scout, or Explorer AR-7 (made by Charter Arms™, Henry Repeating Arms™, and AR-7 Industries™) and 1000rds .22 high velocity ammo [additional 500rds .410 if M6 is chosen] for small game hunting. Other rifle brands in .22 are acceptable. Parts should be plentiful and inexpensive. Repair manuals should be obtained as well as proper tools for your particular weapons. Make sure all ammo carriers and pouches will accommodate the mags and ammo of the chosen weapon. Make sure sling will fit the chosen weapon. Current military issue style and caliber preferred for all weapons. It would be ideal for group to decide on uniform weapons. (i.e. same type and caliber) This will aid in procurement of ammo and mags. All weapons should be outfitted to individual needs and specs but should be kept simple. Do not over complicate the weapon with unnecessary “gadgets”. If your weapons used stripper clips instead of detachable magazines, make sure you have enough to carry 500 to 700 rounds. If an individual desires to “jump through the hoops” of Federal regulations, it is acceptable for full auto rifles, short barreled rifles (SBR), suppressors (silencers), and sub-guns to be acquired. Keep in mind that Full Auto should be used in limited situations such as breaking contact and/or keeping the enemy’s “heads down”.

    5. Optional

    6. All LBE can be substituted with a Tactical Vest, Molle, PLCE, or other LBE.

    7. May substitute with British Pattern 58 Canteen, Camelbak™, or other hydration system

    8. Rechargeable batteries are ideal. A solar or dynamo powered charger is required if this option is chosen. Be sure to include all battery sizes required.

    9. For Extreme Hot Weather Use - Not for Work/Combat use as it offers little protection from accidents and environment.

    10. Not necessaryin area where snow is nonexistent, infrequent, or rarely deep. Not advisable to delete as weather can be very unpredictable.

    11. A good quality knife is essential. A cheap knife will break and then you’ll have no knife at all. A backup knife should also be stored in case the primary breaks. A good folding blade knife would also be a good idea. Remember, big is not always better! This is not a machete. That’s why you have a machete! USMC K-Bar™, USGI M9 Bayonet (not import copy), M10 USMC bayonet, Camillus™ Becker series, British MOD-4 knife or similar type is great. This is a utility knife used for multiple purposes - skinning, cutting, defense, food preparation, etc. Don’t get a double-edged dagger (British Commando/Fairbairn-Sykes type knife) for this purpose. Also, MKIII Trench knives, M7 bayonets, and earlier/similar versions are not good for this purpose. If you want a double-edged type knife or bayonet, you can have it but only in addition to the proper described knife.

    12. One per group. More can be added but this is a large and/or expensive item.

    13. Storage of petroleum products is tricky. Gasoline, diesel, etc. will break down over a period of time. Check for sediment and water contamination regularly. Storage of this fuel should be done from a constantly rotating source. Additives (fuel stabilizer) are available to enhance the life of stored fuel.

    14. All radios together MUST have total of weather, SW (short wave), AM (Amplitude Modulation), FM (Frequency Modulation), CB (Citizen’s Band), FRS (Family Radio Service), and GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies. If able, include HAM (Amateur) Radio. It’s not a requirement but communication over greater distances would be possible with HAM.

    15. Vehicle choices - a 4x4 SUV or pick-up is your best choice. A passenger car will not hold all that you may need and a van, although it will carry large amounts of equipment, will be unsuitable for variable terrain (mud, rocks, logging trails, etc.) and weather (snow, ice, etc.) as would most passenger vehicles.. A former military vehicle will be quite adequate. HMMWV’s (Humvees® or Hummers®), Jeeps®, Land Rovers®, and military or commercial 4x4 pickups are excellent. You will pay a large amount for the HMMWV’s (Humvees® or Hummers®). With Pickups, have a camper shell so items will be away from animals and secure from the elements. Avoid vehicles that have been altered to be higher off or lower to the ground. “Low-riders”, “Monster” trucks, big tires, altered suspensions or bodies, and the like are more hazardous than they are practical. Avoid “Hot Rod” type vehicles. It may require special parts you probably will not EVER be able to get in a disaster scenario and will, more than likely, be a “gas guzzler”. Try to keep it simple and easy to maintain. Air Conditioning is not a priority but heat is (Which is no worry as it is a byproduct of a running engine.). Keep all maintenance up to date and a full tank of fuel. Don’t just buy the vehicle, pack it full of stuff and park it. Drive it at least once a week to make sure it is in working condition. Have the oil changed every 6 months if you are not putting enough miles on it to change every 3000 miles. Keep the fuel tank filled and refill before tank is below ¾. If you are going to leave it parked for a long period of time, consider adding a fuel stabilizer to your tank.

    16. All internal combustion machinery should run on same type of fuel if possible. This will save you from having to store several types of fuel like diesel and gasoline.

    17. Never rely on electronically stored material. Always have material in printed form and protect it from the elements.

    18. Storm-Saf™ waterproof paper/notebooks/pens are excellent for this need.

    19. This item is necessary if you are in a fixed location such as your home or a base camp. This item can be substituted with a sickle blade, swing blade, or other manual tool that is designed to mow/cut grass. The reason is to keep your perimeter clear of debris that may provide a hiding place for enemy combatants, looters, or other undesirable persons or animals. DO NOT use gas powered tools for this purpose as it will unnecessarily deplete fuel reserves.

    20. The easiest way to cover this is to get an already prepared EMT Trauma kit. You can add the rest of the few items not in the kit. This is a good idea as you get the bag and medical items in one shot. There are many common household items that can be used in an emergency situation. Common sense and training can help with these decisions.

    21. In an emergency and you have run out of this; sterilize a sharp knife, needle, and common thread to cover the scalpel and sutures.

    22. As far as antibiotics go, make sure you have several treatments that do not containing penicillin. Many people are allergic to penicillin and would not tolerate taking it. Unfortunately, drugs do have limited shelf life. It is a requirement for medications sold in the US (and most other first world countries) to display an expiration date. It is my experience that these are usually very easy to follow, without the confusing codes sometimes found on food products, e.g. -- Exp. 12/11 = December 2011. The main problem with expired medicines is not that they become dangerous (although they can and will - be wary), but that they lose potency over time, and the manufacturer will no longer guarantee the dose/response effects of the drug. The important exception to this rule is the tetracycline group of antibiotics, which can become toxic with time, there may be others but it is very difficult to obtain this information. Let the buyer beware, the expiration dates ARE there for a reason. In addition, I recommend that if you are acquiring medications on a doctor's prescription that when you have the prescription filled you explain the medications are for storage (you don't need to say exactly what for), and request recently manufactured stock with distant expiration dates. The ideal storage conditions for most medications are in a cool, dark, dry environment. These conditions will optimize the shelf life of the drugs. A small number of drugs require refrigeration to avoid loss of potency. These include insulin, ergometrine, oxytocin and some muscle relaxants. Others such as Diazepam (Valium®) rapidly lose potency if exposed to the light.

    23. In a disaster situation, get to the local Pharmacy and scavenge everything you can carry... medicine, medical supplies, hygiene supplies, everything! Take ALL that you can carry. If you don’t get it, someone else will. Pharmacies have nearly all of the medical items that you cannot get without a prescription such as painkillers and other anesthetics, antibiotics, etc. It doesn’t matter if you don’t even realize there is a need, take it. There may one day come a time when you need it. Keep in mind that many items will need to be refrigerated or stored in a specific temperature with little to no temperature change. Try and make arrangement for this if you can. It will make your medicines last longer.

    24. You can get what type/brand you want but the best is Swedish Firesteel™. Alternatives are: Blast Match™ or Strike Force™ fire starters.

    25. Should ONLY be used/performed by trained personnel.

    26. Gas masks should be serviced about every 6 months. Filters should be inspected every month. Expired, opened, or damaged filters should be discarded immediately as they may become toxic.

    27. Stock ALL necessary wear parts. This would include all filters, spark plugs/glow plugs, belts, hoses, drive chains [motorcycle/bicycle], gasket material, tires, tire repair kits, jumper cables, etc. Also stock repair kits for boat/canoe hulls.

    28. This mainly applies to smokers. You shouldn’t smoke while in the field. It gives your position as the smell of any smoke carries a long way and tobacco has a smell that is easily recognized and associated to man. If you must smoke, do not leave butts on the ground to be found. It gives away your position as well and lets others know you have something of value they may want. Yes... tobacco will be a scarce commodity in times of disaster. Remember the list of items to barter with? If you are a smoker and have gone without tobacco for a long period of time, you know how people can get when they need that nicotine fix. Better off to quit now so you don’t have the same problem. If you must continue to smoke, consider a pipe. You will be able to take advantage of all of the tobacco you may find.

    29. Suppressors have their uses. THIS IS NOT A REQUIRED ITEM but would be a bonus addition. Very good for helping conceal your location. If you can afford it, one for a handgun and one for your rifle would be spot on. If you only get one, get it for the rifle you intend to hunt game with. It will be the one fired the most so the chances of you being heard would be reduced.

    30. For obvious reasons. Let’s face it. If the situation goes on long enough… sex will be an issue. In a survival situation, venereal disease (VD) and pregnancy can be, at the least, a burden. At it’s most… it could mean death. VD, if curable, will use up precious resources and many forms of VD will kill you. Complication during pregnancy most often requires medical attention and it may not be available. Better to be safe than sorry. Condoms have other uses as well. They can be used as an emergency water carrier, waterproof container, or used to keep debris out of the muzzle of your weapon. The point is condoms have more than one use.

ATTENTION: Weapons, explosives, and certain medications are thoroughly regulated by law. Check your local law enforcement agency about what you're allowed to have. Remember that explosives, munitions, and medications are dangerous. Don't do anything you're not trained to do. You'll find lots of recipes for explosives on the Internet, and most of them are extremely unstable, dangerous and illegal. Store chemicals, explosives, weapons, and ammo in a safe place that is inaccessible to children. Nitroglycerin based explosives such as Dynamite do not store well. The nitroglycerin will, in time, leak from the sticks and cause a hazard as well as rendering them inert. The most stable explosives are the plastique (C4) kind - but they are very illegal. Possessions of some medications are felonies. All medications, when improperly used, can be dangerous. Don't break the law - serving time in prison is not good survival preparation. Some of the items or suggestions on this list may be illegal to posses, manufacture, or emulate. Check with local law-enforcement agencies before doing so. I take no responsibility for your use of this list - it is intended as a fictional guide. You must decide what you need, obtain the proper training and licenses, and learn to use the items you obtain. Wrongful, illegal, improper, or careless use may result in prosecution, injury, and/or death to yourself and/or others. Yeah... this is the entire list. I wanted to upload the original as the format does not quite work in the forum.. Granted it is not complete and probably never will. Keeping in mind, this is a list for those staying put. I live in the stix and have no intention of bugging out. For that, I have a smaller kit.

I missed this post. The kitchen sink is one of those items you should already have.

Yep Zoff, I'm the same way.
I plan on staying put as long as possible.
Only to venture out when needed.
And then take a different route each and every time to and from.

    That "is" a good list.
That's why I made it a sticky...even if we are teasing ya just a little.

I agree that you'd need a pretty big place to store all that, but man.....what a great list!

Thanks for showing it and all the comments relative to their use and gathering.
