Welcome to the site, saw you post on a couple of other threads. Great place for information on almost any kind of firearm, but especially AKs, ARs, and 1911s. Looking forward to seeing you in other posts.

Welcome aboard. You know, I'm focused on the black rifle and 300BLK out the moment. BUT, I'm sitting on 3 Romy G's with NodacSpud receivers (w/matched serail numbers) and one milled Bulgarian (w/receiver) kits that need assembly. You gots me thinking back on the AKs now. . . Oh, did I say welcome aboard yet?

    Welcome to the group !!!

The SAR-3 is one of may favorite range AK/AKM/AK-74 versions. Just make sure the hammer strikes the back of the bolt squarely. By now all should be right, but originally when Century replaced the fire control group with their own US made parts to meet the sporting purpose clause of the ATF new second amendment, they didn't take into account that the SAR-3 has a shorter bolt than the standard AK and didn't re-profile the hammer correctly. Other than that, they are great rifles!

    Welcome!

    Good looking rifle.

I like all your Coke glasses too...

When I first opened the photo, I thought you had a bunch of Coke bottles in the dish washer. Then I noticed the glass behind the rifle.

I collect Coke stuff and I'm drinking tea from a Coke tumbler as I type this.

Welcome to Gunsnet.net. SAR-3 rifles are greatly underestimated weapons. Sadly magazines are not so easy to come by.

Beer pictures, beer making and beer drinking are almost as welcome here as the gun porn. Did I mention we like beer? Shiner here...

Like the SARs I have a 1 and 3 both are great rifles. Apex is the only place with original weigner mags right now and they are not cheap. I just bought a few.

    Welcome!!!

    Sorry, didn't see your question.
They are East German AK-74 mags that Century modified the feed lips for the longer 5.56x45/.223. They painted the top black for easy identification, and stamped the floorplate .223. When shipped the mags had a sticker notifying the buyer that they were .223 mags.

The bad side is that they did not modify the follower for the different angle that the .223 feeds, so if the mags were loaded with the full 30 rounds, they wouldn't feed correctly. They did work ok if loaded to 24 or so. Robinson Arms made some followers that when used would allow the mags to function with the full 30 rounds in the SAR-3.

The good news is that I have some of them and through experimentation found they work perfectly with the 5.45x39 in my SAR-2 without further mods.

So in short, E. German orange AK-74 mags modified by Century for use in their SAR-3, but need a follower modification or change to function to full capcity.

Now with that answered, a little history on the SAR-3 which is a really nice rifle. The Romanians designed the SAR-3 to use the magazine from the German STG-940 Weapon System, commonly called a Wieger rifle for the city of Germany it came from. They were trying to get into NATO and had to use the standard NATO 5.56x45 round, so just designed the SAR-3 magwell around mag from the Wieger system rifles to show parts commonality with already approved NATO parts.

The mag is commonly called a Wieger mag (WIEsa, GERmany) and is easily identified as it is the only AK/AKM/AK-74 mag that has two round buttons in the floorplate.

The SAR-3 generally shipped to the land of shall not be infringed with three partially modified AK-74 "pre-ban" mags which allowed the higher capacity during the clinton stupidity. They also cut down the standard Wieger mag to the clinton 10 round capacity and put one of them with the rifle as well. Honest dealers sold the rifle with the full complement of 4 mags, so did not.

Unfortunately late in 2003 ATF realized that the SAR series rifles were not being imported meeting the sporting purpose clause of the new second amendment (1968 Gun Control Act) and banned them. I personally have only seen SAR-3s dated 2000 and 2002, but I believe others have found a couple outside that date.

I haven't tried it, but there are instructions floating around the net on how to bend/modify the followers in the EG bakelights to feed better. Almost everyone seems to recommend loading them to less than 30 rounds...
