    USS NIMITZ Commemorative 1911

The ship I am on, the NIMITZ, is going to be having a Commemorative 1911 sale that I am thinking about participating in. The pistol is a Colt 1911, brushed stainless steel, engraved with the USS NIMITZ and probably a copy of Nimitz's signature, and a commemorative NIMITZ medallion inlaid into the wood grip. The cost is about $775 and we will be able to get a custom made wood display box for another $150 or so. I think I am going to do it even though it is not a gun I will probably ever shoot. Here is a picture of the same gun that was done for the USS TRUMAN. From the time I order it until I can pick it up is 120 days. Luckily (or unluckily) that is not a problem! What do you all think? Is it worth it?

I'm a fan of the 1911. Since it means something to you, I'd say go for it

Yeah I can tell you are interested in this so I would say do it. It is not
really that much money and you are already a part of the ship. Is it
    full size?

    How is your job going?

I would definitely do it. I wish the Canadian navy had a little pride in anything like this. As far as I know they don't even do Zippo lighters up here anymore for the navy...

It is a full size, fully functional Colt 1911 in .45 ACP. I was looking online and you can't get a basic Colt 1911 for under $1000 and this is ~ $775. We are getting some kind of a quantity discount as we have to order at least 30 pistols for the order to go through. I do think I will do my part so that they only have to find another 29 people to buy one. I am seriously considering 2, but I probably won't do that. One to shoot and one to keep as a collector's piece.

As for the job, it keeps me busy. I am like the Public Works Manager/Facilities Manager for a small city/large industrial complex all rolled into one! I seldom sleep through the night without getting a call about something. Then there is the heat. Granted, I am not on land so it is not as hot, but it is still hot! I own the AC units and keeping them up is keeping my Sailors very busy. Even with all that I cannot believe how lucky I am to be able to have this job. I don't know how any job, except for maybe the Deputy Shipyard Commander at either Pearl Harbor or Norfolk Naval Shipyards, could ever beat this!

    Thanks for asking.

Most of our memorabilia is ordered by various organizations (Chief's Mess, Mustang (previous enlisted now officers) Association, Wardroom Association, etc) from places like Vanguard. I just ordered a bunch of challenge coins to give to my Sailors who are doing outstanding work but don't quite warrant recognition from the CO or Strike Group Admiral. Very little is actually ordered by the Navy, except for ball caps that are part of our uniforms and sold in the ship's store.

Here are my 2 1911s together.

Now if I could just get some time to go to the range.

Nice, glad to see you got it. Being stationed on the Nimitz I don't know why you wouldn't get it. Ummm ... you aren't going to shoot it ... right?

It is commemorative, not really a collector piece. I am planning on shooting it. Didn't even cost $1,000 so I don't think I can hurt the value much.

Congrats for a really nice 1911, and Thank You for your service!

So when do you plan on having the ejection port lowered and flared, beaver tail, flat bow trigger and some decent sights installed?

Just joking ... I wouldn't want to give Schuetzenman a heart attack!
