    Going to Keep the Garand

I had been thinking about selling my Garand. I like shooting it but finding ammo is difficult and then a lot of places won't let you shoot the milsurplus ammo as it has a steel core. I was thinking of selling mine and either getting a 30-06 hunting rifle or an M1A.

That was until I went to the Smithsonian American History Museum this last weekend. They had the Garand featured prominently in multiple displays. As I looked at them I was reminded of the history that I own. Nope, not going to sell.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

Have you heard about the new corduroy pillows? They're making head lines!

I am once again reminded that I need to get off my a** and get myself a Garand. That's the last firearm on my "gotta have one" list.

    Wink

I'm a recent convert to Garand-O-Mania. Bought my '43 Springfield M1 about two years ago; since then it's become one of my favorite shootin' irons and is permanently staying in the MrKalashnikov Kollection. Piiingg!

Schuster valve and 150 gr ammo bought commercially http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts...prod20456.aspx

I have used mine for deer hunting in New Mexico with home made 180 gr corelokt bullets.

Glad to hear you are keeping the M1 Garand rifle. I might brand you douche-bag if you sold it and it was your only one. Actually most of the ammo is not steel cored, only the black tip is. M2 ball is lead core but all US made M2 ball rounds have the bi-metal jacket, copper plating over steel jacket over lead core. It will attract a magnet but people that know half as much as they "Think" they do go all full retard and ban it's use on a range.

    You better!

And to add to what S-man is saying; I don't recall the Greek surplus that the CMP sells is steel core. Yes, it attracts a magnet but pretty sure it's just the jacket as S-man stated. Which reminds me I need to get some more of that stuff....it shoots pretty good.

Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever."--Thomas Jefferson

I wouldn't sell my M1. I love that gun. If anything I would like to get another. They are great guns and a neat piece of history to own.

I've got the Century one built with cast reciever and Danish parts kit.

It doesn't have the history, but it's still a keeper for me.

When I take others shooting, it's the Garand that lights up faces when I say, "You want to shoot it?" I let AKAgain shoot mine last year and I got the same enthusiastic response from him!

Trying to get on the no fly list, one post at a time.

While I am partial to dark wood on a Garand, the blond wooded one is cool.

    That is a nice collection.

    Here is mine,

Nothing fancy just a century gun. But it shoots good and I like it. Some day I will get a better M1 but funds are limited right now and it is pretty far down the budget priority list.

That one is chambered in .308. It was built in the 80's as a match rifle. I don't shoot matches, but saw it at a funshop one day and had to have it. I have taken that one deer hunting.
