    Enfield Stock Clean

I hope I didn't screw the stock up on my Enfield.
    Here's what I did.

Set the stock in the sun for a couple hours in 90 degree weather.
Checked on it every 10 minutes to wipe Cosmo off.
I then took it inside and put Dawn dish washing detergent all over it and scrubbed it good with 0000 steel wool. Rinsed with HOT water while scrubbing.
Man, I've never seen so much dirt and crud coming off a stock.
I then set it back in the sun for another hour to see if more cosmoline would sweat out.
No more came to the surface. Next I'm going to try and raise some dings with steam.

I'm going to 0000 steel wool it until slick and apply BLO as described in another thread.

Here's what the stock looks like now. The HGs above it are in good shape compared to what the stock looked like before.

it looks good so far man.

that gray color you have going on there is par for the course. it will most definitely change to something much nicer once the oil starts going on.

    keep us posted!

    Thanks.
I used a clothes iron a little earlier tonight.
I laid a wet rag in the dinged areas and it seems to raise the grain well. Looks like a lot of small dings are now gone.
The deeper ones raised a small amount, but not completely. In the deeper gouges, I scraped off the old finish with a razor knife, then applied steam.
I think when I get all the oil back in, it'll' look ok.

Here's the Savage. It's all "S" marked. Bolt # does not match. Metal under wood has no rust or worn surfaces and is in excellent condition.

After cleaning, wood did not come out as unissued, but it's clean and now protected with BLO.

    looks good man!

leaving the character intact is what it's all about to me. it's part of the rifles history. as a matter of fact, while i may know how to raise a dent i have never done it. i'll do my best to fix cracks and other misuse things but dents are part of general rifle life and stay.

    Thanks Broondog.
I like the dings as they make you wonder when and where they happened.
