Had some issues with my brothers Ruger M77 30-06. Using the 180 gr rounds I use with my gun I was all over the target, call it a 12" pattern, the word 'group' does not apply.
I got some 165's and went out and no joy, wasn't even on target. Today I put up a 25 yard target and couldn't see the front bead. I don't remember those front beads being so small 30 years ago, I guess they are saving money by using less material to make them so they are smaller now. A little white out and the bead was visible to foggy old eye balls. 2 rounds fired and both were in the bullseye. Took it out to the 100 yard range dragging my Weatherby Mk V 300 mag along because sometimes it just needs to be shot. That and the whimpering and a large tear dribbling down the stock persuaded me to bring it along.
4" horizontal group 6" above point of aim with the 06 and I am closing in on zero. Pulled out the Weatherby and fired 2 shots at the sighting target and had 2 holes touching 1" above point of aim which is where I set this gun so zero has not changed in a year.
I still had 3 rounds laying on the bench and I took on a case of the goofy's. Loaded them up in the rifle, set the forearm on the Caldwell bag and then as fast as I could work the bolt I shot those 3 rounds. My plans for shooting the lever actions have been set back a day.
I am on a campaign to shoot every gun in the house and clean them before snow flies and that's a fair amount of shooting and cleaning. I'm pretty sure I won't be doing this rapid fire stunt again, at least not without putting on a shooting jacket first. It was an eye opener.
