    Picking up a 1917 #1 mk3

Getting a 1917 #1 mk3 this week from a friend. Shot one for the first time a few weeks ago. Neat looking guns. I have a thing for old wood and steel guns. And this is going to be my first bolt action.

Was going to get a Mosin next but his came along and I think they look cooler than a Mosin. I still plan on getting a Mosin and already shoot 54 in my Tiger.

My friend is going to head space it, check the bore and measure the crown for me. Just imagine the history of something like this? I like thay the stock goea clear to the end of the barrel. Kinda unique looking.

I'll post pics as soon as I get it. Would love to see pics of other's #1 mk3's.

Just got done shooting it . I usually suck shooting open sights. Hit a half gallon milk jug @100 yards. It just feels so natural to hold.

Congratulations. I've got one made at Lithgow in Australia that I believe is the same year.

cool. This is my first bolt action besides my daughter's Savage Rascal. Everything else is semi auto.
The action is quicker than what I was expecting, pretty smooth. I think the fact that it is almost completely covered in wood is cool. Its easier to hold thany Dragunov even though its bigger. Got it all cleaned up and put some Old English on the wood. Looks beautiful now.

Overall, Id say its in good condition. Not many marks on the wood, steel has no rust but wear marks as can be expected. The only issue with the metal is that a few barrel bands had rust once and have been corroded. But it looks like the rust had been taken off. Figure as long as I keep in clean and oiled, it should last many more years.

other than oiling it , it doesnt need anything else. Maybe a sling.

I'd like to get ahold of another for my Enfield lineup.

I got another Bren MkI/II coming so bolt actions gonna have to wait .

Question. My friend I got it from said it was a 1917. Looking at the band on the stock, I see the number 1911. Is that the date or something else? Maybe he mistook the last 1 for a 7?

looks like 1911 to me. The "7's" are usually struck a little higher.

Just watched a youtube video of a guy shooting one of these at a 1,000 yard target with open sights. 6 misses and 6 hits. The target was a 36 inch plate. I couldnt even see a target that far away. These guns must be really accurate?

I've been wanting one of those since I bought the No 5...

Is the mag cut off the mag release? As far as I can tell, everything is there.

No the mag cut off would be a lever that makes it so the rifle doens't feed from the magazine and works as a single shot.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. I'll take a look and see if it does. Is it supposed to have one?

If it's in it's original MKIII configuration is should have the cutoff, left side of receiver as I recall and a long range volley sight, also left side of receiver. If it's been converted to MKIII* then those two feature should have been removed.

Look here to see the sight and cutoff.

I don't think it has a place for the volley sights. My friend that I got this from has another one with the volley sights. He said that was a Cadet one or something. I don't see a lever of a mag cut off.

    Here are some more pics.

On the top, it is marked 2nd M.D. What does that mean?
