I used iodine treatment on a week-long backpacking trip. Once.

It kills all the good bacteria your intestines need for digestion. Let's just say that late night flatulence in the tent smelled exactly like the turkey tetrazzini I had for dinner....and it still smelled good!

I have since switched to a Katadyne filter.
