.54 cal. Lyman Plains pistol kit finished

8 months after i started, it's finally done. Lots of metal work, the metal parts in these kits are pretty rough. The lock assembly and trigger felt like rubbing 2 rocks together. After hours of filing, sanding and polishing it's as smooth as butter. The case hardening on the lock plate looked like it was painted on.

I finished the crappy walnut stock with a blood red dye/stain mixed with sanding sealer ( 4 coats ), 4 coats of the dye mixed into gloss lacquer, and 5 coats of clear gloss lacquer, and lots and lots of wet sanding and steel wool in between coats. Final polish was with Mothers white billet mag polish and 3 coats of carnuba wax.

    Here she is:

    Beautiful work!
We found out what "dealing" with progressive lefties is all about. Our side gives up something, they give up nothing and the progressives come back in a month or a year and want us to give up more... rinse and repeat...

This kit is up next, it's a pedersoli .50 cal flintlock. Gonna try my hand at doing some inlays, maybe mother of pearl diamonds and brass wire.

The Lyman looked like this before i started

Looks very nice. So nice I'd hate to shoot it and get it dirty. Congrats on a job well done.

    Purty!

Too damned purty to shoot. That's a wall display and something to drool over....not shoot. If you want to build something to shoot, don't make it so purty....

It's a pretty good shooter too, before i did the final finishing i assembled it and took it to the range. I got a 6 shot group inside 3'' at 25 yds off a rest using a .535 ball with a .015 patch over 30 grains of swiss 3F black powder

Did you do anything to the steel besides polish it?

"Did you do anything to the steel besides polish it?"

    No.
Started with 320 grit, then 400, 600 and polished with the green stainless steel polish on a Dremel buffing wheel. Many, many hours of work.
The lock plate and hammer had been case hardened so i had to get that cleaned off. The nose piece on the stock, brass trigger guard, trigger and hammer were sand cast and pretty rough, i had to file all the casting marks smooth before shaping, sanding and polishing. The hammer probably has the most time spent, i changed the profile slightly.

The trigger had a lot of lateral slop, so i made a shim to fit between the trigger and it's housing and polished everything, virtually no side to side movement and smooth as silk now. Feels just like the Timney triggers i have in my ARs

The really pretty part of this gun can't be seen, all of the moving parts function like they're on ball bearings.

Very nice. My wife would like us to get a muzzle loader pistol as a decoration. I am going to show her yours so we can think about it.
