Looking to build a budget AR.

Seen were a few of you guys were talking about PSA stuff so I took a look. Looks like for a little more than $500 bucks you can build an AR. So how about this lower with this upper?

    Lower.

Here is the complete upper. Would this work with the lower I picked out?

I am thinking of getting the lower first since it is the part that needs the FFL transfer and I got a shop that will do the transfer for $15 dollars.

Anyway opinions and advice are greatly appreciated.

I just did one for around $600. Granted I got a nickel boron M16 bolt group and then the removable M4 carry handle, that's why the price climbed a bit. Keep in mind your still going to need sights, it is a flat top. I got a PSA light weight mid length (gov profile)NATO 5.56 1/7 twist chrome lined upper mated to a Omni hybrid lower with a mil spec stock and H buffer. I got mine without the bolt group because I wanted to upgrade, and I'm glad I did the M16 nickel boron BCG is as slick as whale shit.

I will say this about PSA, beware if you order an upper without the BCG and CH included and decide you need or want to add something to the order. I ordered mine without them and then said to myself I need a CH so I'll at least order the CH from them to save time and money shipping one from another source. Well apparently what PSA didn't tell me is they do not ship the items together they come from different warehouses. So I didn't receive my charging handle until a week and a few days after getting the upper. I was not informed this was going to happen. I called PSA as soon as I opened the box and to my surprise no CH. They after about 10 minutes of checking around informed me it was shipping from a different source. I got no further info and the tracking # they gave me was bogus. Finally after calling 3 times to get the correct info I gave up, about a week or so latter my CH shows up in a padded envelope, that's right not even boxed. Luckily it was not tweaked in any way. I did send an e mail to customer service complaining about the whole thing and how it was handled but still to date I've gotten no response, it's been a few weeks now still nothing. Also the finish was partially worn off the crush washer and there were several small nicks on the upper. Not really a big deal, I touched it up with some cold blue. But still not very professional. All in all the product seems to be of very good quality, but I'm not happy the way PSA handled it.

Will the upper work with the lower you picked out ... ah yeah! If it was an FAL upper I'd say no, otherwise all AR15 uppers are going to fit on an AR15 lower. You'll end up with a plain vanilla M4gery type Carbine. I'm not sure it has a chrome line barrel from the product description. Unless it is nitride, chromed or Stainless steel I would personally not purchase an AR barrel. My 2 cents.

Do some looking around for upper kits. Mark-One Sales and DelTon sell pretty good kits that will keep you in the price range you are looking for. I recommend you do a build though. My Areo-Precision lower with a DelTon upper is one of my favorite guns to shoot. It is very satisfying to tell people who ask where I bought it and I say I built it myself.

Don't leave out Wideners, get on their mailing list, they have great sales all the time, at least once a week on uppers.

I am weary of a company that has ENGRISH IN THEIR DESCRIPTIONS.

"Upper is expected to group within the mil-spec." Is that the complete sentence? The mil-spec what?

Here is the PSA upper you want: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index...-handle-1.html

The PTAC line is NOT worth the lower price. The "blemished" PSA upper I posted is the same cost as the one you picked out, but it has chrome lining and high pressure testing and magnetic particle inspection.

You normally can't even find the blemish on PSA parts from what I've heard.

I would buy this same setup today for an extra carbine if I had the cash.

I am going to throw out another option. I bought one of these and I recommend it. Somewhere on here is my review. Not chrome lined, but that is a bit over rated anyway for civilian range use. In fact, chrome lined barrels are generally considered less accurate.

JMHO, but if you're going with Palmetto definitely drop the extra couple bucks for their upgraded barrel.

Crome lined Fabrique National steel? Fuggedaboutit! That's a quality, custom component for a very modest price.

I indorse the upper linked in this thread. Nato chamber, 1 in 7 twist, chrome lined, etc.

Thanks for all the advice and information guys, gave me a lot to look at and educate myself on. I think, what will do is invest into an AR-15 armorer's kit. So I have the proper tools, and stuff. I might have to build it a piece at a time, but that is part of the fun.

$399.95 M4 type barreled optics ready type upper and lower kit. 1 in 7 twist, Nato chamber, melonite coated barrel, bolt carrier with chromed lining of the carrier. Seems like a pretty high quality kit. Toss in a stripped lower for about $100 and you're essentially at the same price as the Palmetto SA stuff.

I'd favor Funkypertwee's suggestion. The price is right, blems are not a big deal, and it should make for a very respectable no frills rifle. Though it doesn't look like CHF is standard on the PSA uppers anymore which is a shame (they get them from FN).

The "premium" uppers are cold hammer forged.
