Talk to me about argentine high powers......the FM's that SOG has........

How many on here have experience with them? How many have ordered one from SOG or J&G? What did you get? I have read a lot online about them, seems like browning snobs and FN snobs hate them, say they suck, but most people who own them say they are great, well made, just just well FINISHED.....I am considering one for a plinker, maybe a carry piece eventually, so i want a reliable gun.....I would go the route of a used 92fs, but everyone wants 400+ for a DECENT used 92fs, which is rediculous to me.

Experiences? Worth it? Pics of any you own possible?

My brother has one, he loves it. I've shot it a few times and cleaned it once for him. Seems really well made.

Only downside, so far, is magazine issues. Both that it came with are tough to load, one doesn't function too well with more than about 7 rounds or so. I could probably take them apart and clean them up, my guess is a bit of filing and they would be fine. Or just buy better mags.

so buy new mags? I see j&g is selling used 13 rd mags for 20 bucks apiece, but if they came with these, they must be crap mags......

It's been a while since I looked into them but here's the story as I remember/understand it:

FMAP built them under license from FN. When the license expired, FN either refused to renew or wanted too much money for the renewal. FMAP said "F this, we've already got the machinery!" and continued building them under the table, so to speak.

FMAP doesn't exactly have a reputation for building crap and IIRC just about every part is interchangeable with a BHP but remember they ARE surplus, so you pays yer money, you takes yer chances.

The Detective version runs a 4" barrel as I recall and will swap onto a BHP frame. I also understand the .22 conversion works on a BHP as well.

I haven't had the chance to really mess with his, so I don't quite know what the trouble is, personally I wouldn't buy a bunch more of those mags until you checked out the ones you end up with.

May need better mags, might not.

All I can say is out of the 2 mags he has, 1 is ok not great...just stiff to load really, the other certainly needs something done to it or to be replaced.

I wouldn't let that stop me if I wanted one though.

Well, if I end up doing anything soon, it likely will be one of these and either an ak or sks, or yugo tokarev. Some combo. The uzi is just way too expensive, and would leave me with little money to stock ammo.....I really want to put away more 9mm and 7.62x25 and 39......My three main calibers.

One of these with a few brand new high power mags......

Mec-Gar. They're OEM for the BHP anyway. I had 15 rd Mecs, factory FN (10rd ban mags) and 17rd South African for the BHP MkIII I let The Old Man talk me out of. They all ran fine but I kept the SA's down to 15 rds. The top rounds seemded a bit looser than I cared for.

I see p1's seem to maybe be coming in again, and thats tempting.....which would you guys go for? I feel like these fm's are sturdier, and likely will last a lot longer then an alumium framed p1......and shoot more types of ammo, and I don't have to worry as much about one breaking....I have always liked the p1, but have just never quite trusted that they will stay together, in good shape, and last a long time like a steel framed gun will......

Still leaning towards a high power......

    Pretty good..

    AKA FM Rosario Hi-Power Militar

Another "clone" which is very nicely made one is the Portuguese Hi power, it was machined at FN Belgium and assembled in Portugal. Theypop up every once in a while and they are usually priced well.

Alloy framed .45s have been around for a while and you don't hear of them letting go. Doesn't the Beretta 92 use an alloy frame?

True, an alloy frame won't hold up as long as a steel frame (especially if abuse/negligence is involved) but 95% of those out there will outlast us unless you're shooting thousands of rounds a year.

    Top, I have my moments.

AFAIK there's not many out there that are as well versed about the HP than Mr. Camp and fewer still that are better versed.

Well, I am going after an israeli fn......hoping to make a deal on it. Nice gun, will probably refinnish it though if I get it....probably go with a hot blueing, pay a smith to do it. MAYBE park, but doubt it......
