    the clay game thread

i know this is mostly hd/tac stuff on this website, but im sure somewhere out there are guys who like to shoot their short bbl guns and flying targets.
    where are you ?
lets make this the thread where we post up stuff about clay shooting. ok?
i dont see a forum for it, so if we can just let this float here on the tac shotgun forum....maybe at least we'll have a place to aim for, for clay topics.
    sound cool?

just curious, how many hd shotgun owners here have an extra long hunting bbl sitting in the closet for it?
how many actually put it on your hd gun and really use it?

i am vehemently against switching barrels. the way i see it, if i need an 18" shotgun, and a 24" shotgun, ill but 2 shotguns.

i do like shooting skeet once in a while, even though i suck at it. i do think weapon chopice matters, as after i got my savage gold wing my scores went up considerably. my best was a 21/25 out f about 3-4 rounds with it last year.

I like to shoot trap. I generally hit 20-21/25. I tried skeet once, it was very different from skeet. I hit 1/25 and it really didn't count as I shot the clay out of order.

Here is what I use to shoot though. My wife bought me this after a long underway a couple of years ago. It is a Winchester Model 101.

I also have a Remington 870 that I used before that. It is now my home defense gun/water fowl gun and the Winchester is my upland bird gun. Here is the 870 set up for home defense with a 20" IC choke and rifle sights.

Here it is with the 30" barrel with the Remchoke.

I just bought a Stoeger Condor 28" to shoot sporting clays with the guys from work.

Since I'm a newbie at this any advise on which chokes to use?
We found out what "dealing" with progressive lefties is all about. Our side gives up something, they give up nothing and the progressives come back in a month or a year and want us to give up more... rinse and repeat...

I haven't shot sporting clays but have watched them and they shoot at about the same range as trap. I use modified in my pump and IC/modified in my double barrel with IC being the first shot for wobble trap (this game throws two targets). I find that full is too tight for the range that these games are played at.

start with modified. s.clays usually requires a few chokes. ic/mod/full at least.

has anyone ever had an issue with hd guns with short bbls at local clay shooting ranges? has anyone been turned away because their bbl was too short?
most ranges have a 24" min.

what I see is the mascot on his horse with his upland stampin down an uprising.

I have shot clays a couple of times it was fun.
both times were outside one with the wind not blowing and the other time was a hoot.
man we had some wind and the clays could/would drop or rise 8-10 inches and occasionally more.
    never had so much fun.
While no one ever listens to me,
I am constantly being told to be quiet.

$6 per round for skeet or trap. $21 for 50 sporting clay targets.

a fellow came to my range with a Hawk 982 12-G HD w/ 18" bbl (see pic) and he couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with it. he got 2 of 25.
he handed it to me to see if i could do any better. i got 23-25. thats me in the pic.
problem was he didnt understand patterns and was shooting his gun with no rear site to match his high rifle front site for slugs. so he was shooting hail mary. it took me 2 shots to figure it out. im of the school where either a shotgun is a shotgun or its a rifle. it cant be both. either it shoots shot or it shoots slugs.
he has since put his riot gun back into riot configuration with a rear site on his receiver and just went out and bought an o&u to shoot clay with!
hes deadly with his hawk on slugs though.
