It still haunts that the astronauts may have been alive during the decent.

What haunts me is knowing first hand how NASA idiots ignored engineer warnings not only with launching the shuttle in the cold with questionable seals in the boosters, but other things that were near disasters that "we got lucky" and survived. Seven lives lost because NASA ignored warnings of a seal that didn't seal below a certain temperature, and not wanting to spend a few dollars to make a proper seal, which unfortunately became reality only after seven lives were lost.

A satellite that got launched with one part untested, the main part of the satellite that to repair in orbit cost tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars, all to save $100,000 during construction. Thankfully it was fixable and no lives were lost, but we got very lucky with just about every manned launch.

Something about the last week in January and first in February that haunts every space junkie. Apollo one Jan 27, Challenger Jan 28, Columbia February 01.

I watched the first shuttle blow up live at home. I was at a fun show eating lunch and watching the second shuttle burn up live.

I was at sea and watched it on the CCTV network broadcast. Doesn't seem like it was that long ago. Just made me realize I got out of the Navy later that same year. Wow! Thirty years passed like nothing!

I watched it on tv in 1st grade at school.

Then in '03 , I got to hang out with the remnants of the Columbia.
Some of that stuff has to be alien technology . Theres stuff in those shuttles that is absolutely mind boggling.
The alloys they use is the most impressive thing I've ever seen and touched.

My Uncle watched it in person. He had some test equipment on board. What is strange, and my brother will SWEAR to it to this very day. He says that he had a dream the night before about the shuttle blowing up. And says that his dream is the same images that he sees in the video footage.

I was in college at the time. I had gotten home from an exam and was sleeping the afternoon off. I kept tossing and turning as I heard it on tv in the background. I later woke up and realized what all the fuss was about. I was too busy to think much of it at the time. :-(

I watched the first one blow up on tv. The second one, I heard the sonic boom and went outside and saw the smoke trail.

I was working in the warehouse on a hot ticket item for Iraq when the Challenger launch failed.
And like many watched and prayed the Columbia would come home.

ECO. 2/6 CAV. Ft. Knox, KY. We were the M-3 Bradley Company in the Squadron. I recall it was Lunch Time. I was laying on my Bunk in the Barracks. and one of the Guys came running in the Hallway Yelling "The Space Shuttle just Blew up! I had just got back from Lunch. Turned on the News, and saw the Video. I remember saying not again! The Memory of Apollo 1, came to mind, being 11 at that time, I will never forget Apollo 1.
