    Home buying advice....inground pools.....

Wife and I might be selling our houise to buy another. Looking at a home today with an inground pool, believe its concrete. Any of you guys own a home with an inground pool? Concrete or fiberglass? If concrete, how hard are they to FIX if they crack and develop a leak? I am a bit worried about the cost of fixing one, and I know that to put a new fiberglass insert in is expensive. We can afford the house, and I am sure we could figure it out if it needed fixed.....Just curious what the experience is here. I have helped maintain a pool before, so I am not as worried about that.

Not sure about insurance in your area, but I was going to install an in-ground pool, years ago, but when I contacted the insurance company, they told me it was a bad idea. Insurance-wise, it would be more of a liability than an improvement, due to people having accidents in it, or sneaking in and drowning, etc. The very minimum I would have to have would be a large, secure fence around it to help keep people out, especially, when I wasn't home.

If I were buying a house, I'd keep looking for one that didn't have an in-ground pool, but that's just me.

Good luck either way you go.

Here we have laws that tell you you have to secure a pool. 4' chain link fence around the pool or your
whole yard. I thought the newer concrete pools had sand bottoms with liners overlaid. But if you do have
an in ground pool you can always fill it in and have a big plant island! Ha ha.

In my opinion, between insurance and the constant upkeep both manual labor and money for chemicals they are not worth it.

Any repair to the lining of either pool requires draining the pool but are not out of the ability of your average guy. Every couple of years you will have to drain the concrete pool and scrub the bottom with some harsh chemicals. Vinyl pools, the liners will have to be readjusted every so often as well and then occasionally totally replaced. So either way cost of water is also a consideration.

I went out of my way to NOT get a house iwth a pool. I didn't want the liability (I have children), I didn't want the upkeep, and I didn't want to pay to run the damn pump all the time.

How much do you like to swim might be a good question to figure this out.

My wife and I both LOVE swimming, and although I have a 14 month old son, it already has a large wodden fence around it, and we would add a wrought iron fence around the pool's concrete patio itself. I don't know. Makes me a little nervous, but I have talked to people who said the pool maintanence isn't that bad. But we will see. I appriciate the advice, and if anyone owns a pool, I would love to hear from them. Repair costs make me nervous.....I can scrub a pool every couple years, I can do manual labor myself. But a little nervous about paying large amounts to have work done on things I cannot do myself.

Also, what does a pump usually cost to replace?
