Prince Ruperts Drop Vs .22 LR

A Prince Rupert's drop is made by dropping molten glass into cold water. The bulb is pretty much indestructible but if you break the tail the whole thing will explode. Besides this being cool I like slow motion bullet videos.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

That was pretty cool. Kind of hard to believe that regular glass can be stronger than a bullet.

(I hope he sent a copie of that video to the librarian.)

BTW, that guy has too much free time available....

Great video, thanks for the link! That high speed photography is amazing being able to see the shock wave in the tale of the drop.

    Fascinating!

Considering the drops were held up by two strings and the shock waves went into the tail and caused the fractures to come back up from there, I wonder if it would have happened that way if the drop was held by a SINGLE string.

Could the double string be inducing stress on the tail when the bullet hits causing it to then shatter?

i thought the same myself. but the nature of prince rupert drops they are very fragile n the tail. i was a bit surprised that the one that didnt break survived getting thrown across the yard (depending on how it landed)

I think it would have been better if he could have used one string but had to use two strings because environmental conditions. Even with two the glass was swinging, I expect because of a light breeze. If he had only used one string I am not sure he would have been able to hit the spinning piece of glass. Having only one connection point, though, should have prevented the tail from breaking off so often.

    Outstanding
    , thanks for sharing.

I have seen a champagne bottle turn a 22 long rifle, I would guess it has to do with the shape as well as the hardness of the glass.
