My SIL wants me to build her a computer

Now I have done it before but it was years ago (7) and I haven't kept up
with the tech. She doesn't game but does do quite a bit of graphic/video
type stuff and will also use it for work needing the graphic/video capabilities.

I built mine from the case out and spent 3 months doing homework but hers
is dead now and needs one in a hurry. Not today type of thing but soon.

I have a budget of 400 and I have a case. Thoughts on MB and CPU combo
I want to stay with ASUS MB and an AMD processor. But will consider all ideas.

Will need a really good graphics card and of course the RAM sticks
along with a good DVD R/W drive.

I have already built her a 1 TB WD Black HDD with 7 pro she has that
drive at home but does not want to put in her PC.

So lets see what happens.... TIA.
While no one ever listens to me,
I am constantly being told to be quiet.

400 is barely enough to cover a CPU and motherboard, a mid quality graphics card will run you at $400.

Given your statement that she needs video editing and for work $400 isn't even close to enough budget to build a PC suitable that is of professional caliber. http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...oxed_Processor Intel Core i7-6800K Broadwell 3.4GHz LGA 2011-3 Boxed Processor. This has 6 cores and 14 threads to handle video editing and creation. It costs $380 bucks at Micro Center in Duluth.

A Motherboard to run it next. http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...el_Motherboard ASRock X99 Extreme4 LGA 2011-3 ATX Intel Motherboard about $190 bucks at Micro Center in Duluth, GA.

Lastly a power supply. http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...r_Power_Supply 650 watt Corsair partial modular design $70 bucks.

Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16GB 2 x 8GB DDR4-2400 PC4-19200 CL16 SR Dual Channel Desktop Memory A 16 Gb kit which is two sticks of 8 Gb each, DDR4 for low power consumption and low heat generation. About $100 bucks at Micro Center in Duluth. http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...Desktop_Memory

Graphics card, frankly you need something in the $250 buck range as a minimum price point. You have Radeon RX 480 series cards in this price point, there are several makers of this card. It has 8 Gb of GDDR5 ram. For about $20 bucks more maybe a 6 GB GDDR5 equipped Nvidia 1060 series card by one of the makers.

You'll need the OS, example Windows 10. That's going to run you $110 for the home edition 64 bit or $140 for the Pro version 64 bit. All prices are from Micro Center. No sense mail ordering stuff if there is a hurry and if there is a problem with anything, you can take it back for up to 15 days I think it is. Honestly, you're looking at

    http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...W_Burner_-_OEM DVD drive $19

    http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...r_Power_Supply
Corsair partial modular Power supply about $70 bucks.

Case, you'll need an ATX board capable case that still has 3.5 inch drive bays for that DVD burner drive. Probably you can find something under $80 bucks perhaps as low as $60.

All in all I am skeptical that it can be done for under $1200 for a really video editing capable PC. Now if you go Gaming grade you can probably do something for $800 ish by going i7 skylake non K version, (meaning no over clocking) the 7600 cpu is about $280 so that would save $100.

This Asus 1151 socket mother board http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...el_Motherboard $155. That will save $40.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...el_Motherboard lower cost board, $122 ish.

I agree, idon't think $400 is enough for what you want. Imho, I don't know if it is worth building then anymore. I just bought an all in one for $800 that I probably couldn't have built for near that much and it came with an os and a warranty. Got 12gb ram, i7,1tb ssdhd, Nvidia 930 graphics card and oh yea a nice 24 in monitor with win 10 on it.

I don't know if you game but a 950, (I am assuming you typoed) is a really low powered card and it doesn't cost much. Which a 950 is now more expensive than the newer 1050 ti models.

check to see if a Mac Mini will do the trick. Im not sure what sort of graphics work you are talking about but my wife use to work at a place making flyers. She did a LOT of photoshopping pictures for the ads. It was all done on Mac. Thats why we use nothing but Mac stuff now. If you look at the specs it might be what she needs.

Well I know she doesn't need a 200 dollar graphics card just an improvement over the one she has. 30 or 40$
would do, she is working with a computer that still has ribbon tape in it. So I was thinking along these lines:

i3 is only a dual core. Ultimately, that will make a computer but it will not be able to do much more than run internet viewing and Microsoft Word documents. Not video editing, not unless you want to sit and wait 30 minutes to process a 5 minute video.

Hah. No. When I was a kid, I would help install headers , shift kits, etc.. for my buddies. I've helped people with their ham radio stuff. Oh, and all my relatives want me to make them Adirondack chairs.

What do you want for $200? I got one with an I7 and a Radeon 4550. He said his limit was $400. That's in the realm of possibilty.

Yeah I was just looking for direction. Hell she is not making a hollywood movie or trying
to hack hillary. I have read how some here have built super computers, by my standards,
but can't give me Look at this ASUS board with this AMD 4 core chip and it comes with this ram
stick and this graphics card maybe a little expensive 60$ but it should give her what she needs.

I'll just keep digging around 400 is very doable I have the can, fans, HDD but will need a power source
    that is more sata friendly.

I'd buy a dell i5 refurb, upgrade the power supply (a google search will tell you which one will take an atx supply) and find a used mid line graphics card off of ebay. Its the only chance you have of getting her what she needs >$400. IMO

Yeah since I have the can, mATX , I will build to that spec. Looking around at egg and tiger I think I can build her
one of my own for the budget given and for me it would be special. She did ask me for this and I said ok. I can
    do this.
Thanx ninner. Haven't been round much huh? 22
