Picked this up the other day. Bore is dark but strong rifling and good crown. The rifle shoots good enough for my liking. There is usual case bulging on ejected brass but nothing drastic. No signs of headspace issues or over pressure. Oddly enough the bolt serial number is one digit off. The bolt is 774 and the receiver is 775. I assume the mum was ground and then the receiver was later polished to hide the scrub marks.

If the mum was ground off that meant American occupation troops took the bolt and threw it into a big pile and took the rest of the gun and threw it into another big pile. To be ONLY 1 digit off is amazing. I kinda wish there were some dudes who took the time to re-mate the correct bolts to the correct rifles after the war.
My dad brought one of those shorties back from Guadalcanal. It sat in my uncle's barn for about 20 yrs before my dad gifted it to me. Neither me nor anyone else has ever been able to hit sh#t with it...I suspect excessive corrosion in the barrel, it looks like a sewer pipe.

I have been searching around for a cleaning rod and dust cover. Seems to be a lot of reproductions out there. I will probably go that rout but im wondering what length the rod is. I will have to take the stock off again and measure from the metal block it screws into out to where I think it should be protruding to, and then compare that to the length posted on the reproductions.
Another question, Do you guys know if Swedish mauser stripper clips will work with these rifles?

That would do it. Mine has a decent bore. I have seen a lot worse in some lee enfields that were still being hunted with. I should be able to do ok with what I have.Originally Posted by mrkalashnikov

Yea, there is a mail-order company here in Canada called Tradex, I deal with them quite a bit. Everythign from actual guns to parts and accessories. They have all sorts of weird stuff. PPU currently produces the jap brass. So shouldn't be a big problem to get more if i need it.
I heard you can also resize and trim 303 british brass if that helps.

I've got one of these and I like how handy and compact it is (unless you add the Type 30 bayonet, but then at least it's not as bad at the Type 38)!
It seemed to me this would have been the best choice for the single service long arm of the Japanese Army and Navy.
You never know where're you'll find one. I got an original dust cover for my type 99 at a gunshow for around $5, even had the same "patina" as my rifle.

I found the dust cover but the cleaning rod seems to be harder to find. Not in a huge hurry. I know one will turn up eventually.
