I was just reading his Wikipedia entry...

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slobod...CTY_indictment

Praljak was among six accused by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), in relation to the Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia.[1] On 5 April 2004 he surrendered and was transferred to the ICTY. In his indictment it was alleged that Praljak as a senior military official commanded, directly and indirectly, the Herceg-Bosna/HVO armed forces which committed mass war crimes against Bosnian Muslim population in around 30 municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In his role as a high-ranking official in the Ministry of Defense, he was closely involved in all aspects of not only the Herceg-Bosna/HVO military planning and operations but the actions of the Herceg-Bosna/HVO civilian police too.[1]
He'd been in jail clear since 2004. So even with his upheld 20-year sentence, he'd already served most of his time, and didn't have that far left to go.

Guess he just wanted to go out in a blaze of glory and make a political statement against the legitimacy of the Court, to "have the last laugh" as it were.

The recent history of that region is pretty ugly, especially the decades leading up to the collapse of the former communist Yugoslavia. Western intelligence agencies (namely the CIA and German BND) were really working hard behind the scenes, stoking up racial and ethnic tensions, so that when Yugoslavia finally tore itself apart there was a lot of "bad blood" (to put it mildly.)

"That tyranny has all the vices both of democracy and oligarchy is evident. As of oligarchy so of tyranny, the end is wealth; (for by wealth only can the tyrant maintain either his guard or his luxury). Both mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms." -- Aristotle, Book V, 350 B.C.E

Trump needs to change that. the Kurds not only are deserving of their own state, but fought hard with us. One of the few allies in the region. It will be a crime to desert them now.
