    THEN...it was all downhill.
I worked at DATSUN back then ... we hired a young mechanic and about 2 months after he started he rolled in to work in a T-Bird just exactly like that one, paint, wheels ... everything. It almost cost him his job, until he show management that he had ordered the car months before he started working there.

I don't know if its such a big deal these days, probably depends on the owner of the dealership, but at that time it was seen as "Biting the hand that feeds you"

Had a '78 T-Bird myself....really nice car, we used to travel a lot back in the day and it was an awesome hi-way cruiser. Basically the same as the one in the pic except it had a tannish/orangish roof and accents.
Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket???

Way back in my working days, I worded for a General Motors Division. I drove a Honda and when asked why I didn't support the company that payed me, I told the people that I gave them more than 8 hours of my life every day. Plus working at Allison Transmission made it hard at the time to buy a vehicle with a heavy duty transmission to support them. Seems the 8 hours of my life got their attention. Not many thought of it that way. They never bothered me after that.

The local steelworkers union and possibly the mill too used to have signs on the parking lots saying "NO FOREIGN MADE VEHICLES ALLOWED". There may even be some still around...if I'm out and about tomorrow I'll get a pic if they still exist.

My cat does it when she is feeling affectionate. She doesn't bite hard, but we try to discourage her doing it by doing other things she likes for example she loves to rub her face all over mine. That generally keeps her pretty happy.

    How?

My wife grew up in the Saginaw Bay area of Michigan, just about everyone in her small town worked for GM; her dad was an engineer for one of the plants.
There was an unwritten rule that you did not buy foreign made cars, and if you did you could not park in the factory lot without risking a lot of vandalism.

My wife bought the first Datsun 240Z anyone had ever seen in her town cause she liked the color; that crappy fluorescent lime green they came out with.

So not only did she commit a major boo boo buy buying a "Jap" car, you could see it coming a mile away, her dad took a lot of shit for her decision; he made her park it on the street where it was a target for vandalism.

Attitudes about "buying american" were changing back then though. Folks were getting fed up with the shit that was coming out of detroit and GM was packing up their shit and moving out of town.

Yeah I remember that, back in the '70s there was a big backlash against foreign made cars, our local steel mill was no exception.

The ones at the union hall are still there, if a bit weather beaten.

If there were ever any at the mill itself those are long gone....it's owned by the Russians nowadays so there's probably not as much anti-foreign sentiment.

Today, those signs would be called "discriminatory" anyway, and provoke leftist violence and rioting....
