I wonder if there are any contractors today that can build like this with the same materials they used.
Probably, but it would cost a billion dollars and take 3x as long ...
I used to work on historic roof restorations about 25 years ago. The contractor i worked for was connected to a lot of city, state and federal agency's and we rarely worked on anything less than 100 years old. We had to take them apart and put them back together using materials that matched the originals as close as possible. a lot of times special materials had to be newly manufactured to match.
It was a lot of fun, i learned a lot, made big bucks and traveled a lot. You're right though it took a long time ( there was no OSHA when these roofs were installed) and cost a shit ton of money.
One roof in particular was a forest service ranger station that was 90 something years old. It was natural slate, about 2700 sq.ft, steep, and cut-up. Three of us worked on it for over 2 months and the price to the forest service was $57,500 , uncle sam is rich
