It's a shame what they did to the Thunderbird.
From 55 to 57 it was small, and very sporty, and cute. Then 1958 happened and it all went down hill from there.

I think Ford thought they couldn't (or maybe didn't want to) compete with the Chevy Corvette ... which is a shame as it was another 7.5 years before they came out with another "sporty" car, the Mustang.

As beloved as the first generation T-Bird is it never sold well....at least not compared with the square birds that replaced it in the second generation.

Total production from '55-57 was 53,166 units with the best year being '57 with 21,380.

Total production from '58-60 was 198,191 units with the best year being '60 with 92,843.

From a business POV it wasn't even close to being a bad move.

    Best selling T-Bird of all-time???

    Seventh generation '77-79....955,000.

    THEN...it was all downhill.

You tried to run over her with your 58 T-bird?

My dad had one of these! We drove from here to Orlando to go to Disney World in 1977. The electric windows seemed a marvel of modern technology then...now even the cheapest Hyundai's have them.
