(Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has agreed to provide congressional investigators confidential records on a failed gun-trafficking operation during the Obama administration known as "Fast and Furious" that long has been criticized by Republican lawmakers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Justice Department would hand over documents to the Republican-led House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that had been withheld by Democratic former President Barack Obama's administration.

The agreement reached by Republican President Donald Trump's administration will effectively end a six-year long legal battle in which the committee had gone to federal court to try to enforce a subpoena it had issued to obtain the records.

Congressional Republicans have been pressing the Justice Department for years about the operation. Named after a movie about car racing, the operation sought to curb gun-trafficking criminals who were selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels.

In June 2012, the Republican-led House voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder, an Obama appointee, in contempt for failing to turn over documents about the operation. The committee sued Holder for access to the documents in August 2012. Obama asserted executive privilege to block the disclosure of the documents.

Democrats at the time accused Republicans of engaging in a partisan witch hunt.

In an effort to build bigger cases against major gun traffickers who were selling arms to Mexican cartels, U.S. law enforcement officials elected not to prosecute lower-level offenders transporting more than 2,000 illegal guns.

The operation and its flaws became public after two of those firearms were found in Arizona at the scene of a fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

In September 2012, the Justice Department's inspector general released a report faulting 12 department employees for failures related to the operation. The report vindicated Holder, concluding he neither conceived the operation nor attempted a cover-up.

Holder, now a partner at the law firm Covington and Burling LLP, could not be immediately reached at his office on Wednesday.

It may be a few months, but I have an idea that the DOJ is going to release a lot of info, including specific names, of a lot of criminal activities carried out be the obama administration.

    Then, watch out....

Trump may appear to be taking things slowly concerning those criminal activities, but I think he's making sure that whatever the DOJ comes up with will stand up to any lies and obstruction the Dims may use against it.

This operation facilitated the murder of a Border Patrol agent. It'd be nice to have some murder charges filed.

    Yep.

People have been bitching about what a do-nothing slacker Sessions is without realizing he was quietly working behind the scenes to get rid of the bad actors. Rust never sleeps.

What's the point of ordering arrests when you have a compromised FBI executing the warrants? What's the point of prosecuting when you have a compromised DOJ. The judiciary has been a corrupt cesspool in open rebellion. The FBI, DOJ, CIA have now been purged. Trump is getting his originalist and uncorrupted judges in place.

All the pieces are in place now for a crazy next few months.

Some have been purged, but certainly not all.

Whenever Congress gets stalled by the regulatory agencies they created, why don't they simply hold all funds going the the top regulatory employees at the agencies under criminal law effectively firing them? 6 years is a lot of time to scrub records and emails. We'll never find out how far to the top this went though we know. Nobody will be prosecuted. This story is getting old, when craps abuse their power and walk all over the laws and constitution they get a pass.

That seems to be the new truth, Lies are facts, up is down, grass is blue and the sky is green. Spies are good for your political campaign but killary's campaign didn't rate one for some reason, perhaps this si why she lost. Yes, lying seems to be the sop for these folks. If an 0bama regime agent or anti Trumper speaks, it's going to be a lie.

Funny how nobody remembers that before Fast and Furious became public knowledge the news media was full of stories about how we needed stricter gun laws in the US because of all the guns being smuggled into mexico.

What's that word they love so much "collusion"

I have wondered why someone hasn't done a story on how often F&F firearms have been found to have been used in a crime. If "millions of guns" were going over the border it seems statistically improbable for some many F&F firearms to have been identified as used in crimes. If "millions" means 1 million and "about 2,000" F&F guns is taken as 2,000, then F&F guns make up about .22% of the illegal guns going to Mexico. But they seem to make up (can't find any exact numbers) of guns found at crime scenes.
