Well, recon, I've watched this thread all day. I guess this is how our history goes.
No enemy of America would have ever been killed if they didn't show up to be killed. HDR
Yep. Sad that this isn't more cared about.

The largest amphibious invasion force ever assembled. What brave men. I wonder if it could be pulled off with todays youth.
"And how we burned in the camps later thinking, what would things have been like, if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain, whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family?"
Today they would court martial the Generals in charge of the operation due to unacceptable casualty levels.
Gentlemen may prefer Blondes, but Real Men prefer Redheads!
An interesting factoid about that day is the crucial role the French Resistance played in sabotaging infrastructure to prevent Germany from being able to timely send reinforcements. Not only did they take out buried telephone/teleprint cables and destroy electrical facilities, but in the southeast, 52 locomotives were destroyed on June 6 and the railway line cut in more than 500 places. Normandy was isolated as of June 7. An increase in radio activity on June 5 was correctly interpreted by German intelligence to mean that an invasion was imminent or underway. However, because of the barrage of previous false warnings and misinformation, most units ignored the warning.
"That tyranny has all the vices both of democracy and oligarchy is evident. As of oligarchy so of tyranny, the end is wealth; (for by wealth only can the tyrant maintain either his guard or his luxury). Both mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms." -- Aristotle, Book V, 350 B.C.E
What really saved our asses was the spoof that made Hitler think the invasion was really going to hit in another part of France, making him hold a panzer army in reserve until it was too late. If Rommel had access to that army when he'd asked for it, the invasion might have failed.

Also, relive D Day via an entire day's radio broadcast of the event, downloadable as mp4s;

Today the hate America news media would be screaming for the heads of Eisenhower for leading the massacre of 20,000 soldiers, and FDR for signing off on the slaughter.
Hitler would be proud of what our IRS and other American federal agencies have become, and the ministry of propaganda known as ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc.
My mother, who is in her 80s, asked a friend of her's who is in her 40s, if she knew what day 6/6 was - and the friend just said "Wednesday". Sad.
“I have little patience with people who take the Bill of Rights for granted. The Bill of Rights, contained in the first ten amendments to the Constitution, is every American’s guarantee of freedom.” - - President Harry S. Truman, “Years of Trial and Hope”
Two things I learned about D-Day from the following book.
1. The Germans had experimental fuel-air munitions. The aerosol component was kerosene vapor, powdered aluminium and charcoal dust The use of these munitions to destroy a concentration of American tanks (assembled for Operation Cobra breakout) was averted by a timely US artillery strike.
2. Hundreds of Germans were killed by the single shot Liberator handguns air-dropped into France.

Had Hitler listened to any of his generals VS being full of himself/high all the time , I really think Europe would be completely different today.

I read an account of the German fa weapon in use on the eastern front. A tanker was driving through a recently contested battlefield and described a Russian artillery emplacement where everything looked normal, the men still stood at their weapon, shells in hand to load the tube, but they were all dead. No damage apparent. This freaked out the tanker and he was told by an officer that they had tested a new weapon in this battle and this is how it killed, the internal organs were ruined in the blast and they were killed instantly. The witnesses were told to never tell anyone of what they'd seen.
I've heard of tot attacks by our artty in ww2 where an entire German column was killed with barely any damage being apparent, the half tracks, trucks, kubelwagons, kettenkrads were sitting there on a hill, the men still sitting inside at the wheel, operating the radios, etc but they were all dead, due to overpressure. When a time on target attack was made, every tube that could bear on the target was time fired so the shells exploded all at the same time, creating a massive concussion.

The book I referenced mentions an initial use of a 1rst generation FA weapon on Russians. This first generation weapon required a separate launch of HE rockets after an initial launch of vapor producing rockets. Apparently the Russians considered the FA weapon to be a chemical weapon and were going to retaliate with chemicals weapons causing the Germans to halt the use of FA rockets. Also, the book mentions the testing of FA explosives on Russian prisoners. The weapon the Germans were going to use to stop operation Cobra was a 2nd generation weapon that functioned like a modern FA munition and would kill anyone within 10 kilometers of the blast.
