The tribal checks come from the profits of casinos that are not frequented by Native Americans but by others. So they are not redistributing wealth by forcing people to pay, they are enticing people to come to their facilities and spending their money which is then split between the members of the tribe.

If only we could get our federal government to work the same way, and get rid of income taxes as a means of collecting revenue instead.

Well, I would think a dozen mega-casinos in every state would generate some SERIOUS revenue, for starters.

Could always branch out into other industries/enterprises as needed. Instead of corporate profits going to private individual stockholders' pockets, put such profits to use for the public good instead.

Nationalize all the big banks and have half the national debt paid off right there.

Some times you write things that show you are becoming more conservative. I doubt you will ever be a hard line conservative like most here, but your liberal beliefs are softening.

As to your statement, we can do that and we have in the past done this. Up until the early 1900s the government supported itself solely through tariffs, excise taxes, custom's duties and public land sales. Of course, the government was not seen as the countries baby sitter so the financial obligations were much less (defense, roads, fire and police services, and funding the federal government which was much, much smaller than it is now). If we were to move back to a culture that depended on self-reliance instead of government dependence I think we could fund the government in much the same way.

Years ago, I taught a girl who had just immigrated from Venezuela and she said Venezuela was a pretty good country. While they weren't as prosperous as the US, they were able to take care of themselves. Since Socialism was instituted and everything was nationalized, it degenerated very quickly into a real shithole.

While Venezuela didn't start out as "gold," it sure didn't start out as "a pile of shit," either.

Before Communism and Socialism and dictators took over, much of SA wasn't in too bad of shape.
