Anybody here ever see the dark web?

What is it exactly? What would you see that could possibly be worse or better than what's on the regular web?

Probably, the best one on this board to ask is LAGC.

It was dark, I couldn't see a thing.

I've read quite a bit about it, but never ventured there myself.

You need to download a special web browser (Tor, or "The Onion Router" browser) to be able to access any of it.

The Tor network was originally developed by our own US government (DARPA) as a means of providing secure, encrypted communications for our intelligence and military officers in the field without being able to be monitored or traced by foreign governments, but the project was eventually passed off to the private sector for more widespread development.

While its primary use is to be able to visit regular (clearnet) web-sites anonymously without your true IP address being logged, it also facilitates the hosting of hidden (darknet) "onion" web-sites that are very hard for the authorities to track down.

While this has been a boon for political dissidents living in oppressive countries (or just regular citizens who want to get around government censorship), it has also fostered quite a bit of criminal activity as well.

One of the most "revolutionary" onion sites on the dark web, I hear, is one that simply has the The Holy Bible, in all the major translations. Understand that being caught reading the Bible can get you jailed (or worse) in certain countries...

As LAGC stated, it's a web that is very hard for governments to track. As a result, it's the primary hosting means for anything illegal; child porn, human trafficking, gun running, drug smuggling, terrorist activities, selling stolen goods, selling stolen credit card/personal histories that were obtained by hacking into various company sites, etc.

(I'd bet Hitlary has her own site somewhere on there, too.)

from what I understand its where people go to do illegal stuff like openly buy and sell drugs, human trafficking, prostitution, etc.

I'm sure the authorities are very well aware of it and monitor the hell out of it. Unless you really knew what you were doing to mask your identity, I'd stay the hell away from it.

Since I have no need or desire, I've never seen it.

At this point unless you are involved in some sort of organised crime and have inside information all you are going to find is a nice honey pot.

Most of what you hear about it is a bunch of bullshit, there is a guy that does a weekly series on what he finds on the dark web
