Well, liberals do believe in giving people second chances. (Of course, so did most Christians, once upon a time... that old school Biblical belief that anyone can be redeemed in Christ.)
As to those attempted murder cases that ended up in probation, one of them it sounds like the guy plead down to a lesser crime and had no prior criminal history, and in the other, dude got off because he became a "highly valuable" government informant.
I don't like seeing informants getting off with sweet plea bargain deals either, but that's how our criminal "justice" system is currently set up. Without a steady stream of snitches ratting out, the government would never be able to solve most crimes or secure so many convictions in court.
