Thai armor is only likely to face Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar (their neighbors). So, a modern tank like this meets their needs (even if it isn't, perhaps, an Abrams or Merkava or Leopard). Malaysia, which they share a small border with, does have more some modern MBT's too, I believe.
I doubt we sell Abrams to third worlders with the good chobham armor, just some cast crap, so they likely would be disappointed by us anyway. The Iraqi Abrams don't have chobham, for ensample.
