A few years ago I read an interesting article that made a very good case that Capone did not order the St Valentine's Day killings.
The author made the case that the Chicago police did it.

A few months earlier the son of a Chicago police captain was beaten badly in a bar by members of the Moran gang.
    Weeks later he died.
Witnesses at the hospital overheard the captain assuring his son that they'd take care of it.
The Chicago cops were well known for "taking care of their own". Harm a cop or especially a relative and the person responsible had a small chance of making it to a station house alive.

Months after the killings the two Thompson guns were found on a farm owned by a well known gangster who was related to the captain.
Years earlier the man had murdered another gang member by walking up to his door dressed in a police uniform and shot him when he answered the knock.

The police car used by the killers was never found and the author said that that was because it WAS a police car and was simply put back in service. No one found it because it was in plain sight.

In any case it was an interesting possibility.
