    I Am Now Retired!

After 35 years of active naval service, I have retired! Here is the shadow box that my Sailors, Chiefs and Officers made for the retirement. It has my Chief's cutlass and Officer's Sword crossed, my awards and ribbons, all the ranks I held and the command I was at when I held that rank, both enlisted and officer, and my retirement flag that was flown over the NIMITZ. The ceremony was excellent. I asked one of my Lieutenants to be the coordinator and I didn't have to do anything else! It was all much better than I could have imagined.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

Have you heard about the new corduroy pillows? They're making head lines!

Ah, I see you are a descendent of ol Davy. Congrats on carrying on the tradition. Best find a job or full time hobby or you'll be bored to death in no time.

it may take a few weeks for it to sink in. my advice is enjoy it slowly. don't spend every day fishing, golfing, or whatever. there is plenty of time. congrats and thank you for your service.

Congratulations, Chuck. Now, you can spend your time doing some of the things you really want to do...like shoot, and shoot, and shoot....ad infinitum.

It looks like nestled in there is a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and a Combat Action Ribbon. How did you misspend your misspent youth, Cmdr.?

Awesome. I would imagine the ceremony made your eyes get a little blurry. It must have felt really good.

Time to focus on your gun pile and shooting the barrels out.

    Most of all don't stop.

No combat awards or ribbons for me! I made my wife mad (she still hasn't forgiven me!) for volunteering to take a temporary assignment that would have had the possibility of combat. I was not accepted, though. Told that my training and where I was stationed was too valuable for me to leave. I have a bunch of Sea Service ribbons, some Expeditionary medals (some for serving in combat zone, but not in combat) and some administrative awards, but nothing for heroism or valor.

    Unhappy

1984, Dark Year indeed, I was in the Horrid, 3rd Armored Division(Spearhead) HHC 1/32nd Armor BN. 3rd. BDE. Friedberg, Hessen, then known as West Germany. I am sure you were better off that Year than was I.
With the Wonderful Month of May, 1985, I came home, never to go back. Got out a Year later. I wanted to stay in, but sometimes a bad Duty Station, is all it takes. The best thing the Army ever did in it's History, was Disband the 3rd. Armored Division in 1991 after the end of the first Persian Gulf War. As long as your Ship did not Sink in the open Ocean, You had a good life. Congratulations on making it to your end of Service. Paul

Sometimes your training makes you to valuable to be killed. Sometimes a guy's MOS required him to go to Germany rather than Viet Nam. During the war everyone would have liked to be in Germany; after the war everyone wished they had served in Nam. Funny that we are that way.

    Bravo Zulu!
