I remember reading about that shortly after it was found. It's easy for one to think that it was left there because the owner was in a rush because he was in danger, but I can just as easily accept that the owner was not used to carrying it, had to take a piss so he propped it against a tree, then forgot it. I have seem similar things happen with guys in the field and on deployments and these are people who are trained on their weapon and should be used to carrying it. Either way, an outstanding find.

To "forget" a valuable and life-saving piece of equipment like that seems unlikely. What seems more likely was that somebody may have either camped there for the night and died in their sleep. Scavengers would have dismembered the body and scattered the parts. The fragments of cloth left from clothing and blankets would have disintegrated and/or blown away decades ago.

My guess is that he put the rifle down for a reason (to relieve himself, fix his pack, tie his horse, etc.) and something bad happened to him, preventing his from retrieving the rifle.

I agree, I don't think he just "forgot" it.
