I was in China for work a few days ago. From talking to people there, who only get Chinese approved media, the story China is setting up is something like this:
-the extradition treaty was needed since corrupt former government and business people from China are hiding out in HK
-the US and Taiwan are encouraging and controlling the protests
-the protesters are being paid by the US and Taiwan, they are just doing this for money
-the protesters are violent, attacking the police frequently
