I was stationed at that base from 1973 until 1975. Then it was MCAS(H), 3rd Marine air wing helicopter base about 3 miles from El Toro. There were owls living in the rafters that could drop turds as big as a cow pie. They filmed part of the movie "the hindenburg" there before i got out. I was a heavy equip. operator, so i got assigned to move shit out of the way for the movie crew.
