Not at all. It's simply a radial engine.

The V-Twin engines used on motorcyles are basically the same concept as a radial, but of course only have two cylinders. Just remove three cylinders from Napots' motion display and that's a V-Twin.

That long pause as the crank comes back around is what gives a Harley that distinct sound.

There was also the GM "oddfire" V6 which was a 90 degree V8 block with two cylinders removed. So, the engine had a missing power pulse every revolution. Using "F" for fire and "B" for blank, the odd fire V6 ran like this: F F F B F F F B...

Wonder what they were trying to accomplish with that?

I can see like Chrysler where they made a V6 by chopping off the back back two cylinders of a 318...not a whole lot of R&D expense and a lot of interchangeable parts....but why would you leave two blank cylinders???

It does sound rather typical of GM though...they do have a habit of making some really terrible engines.

My parents bought a cadillac with the cylinder de-activation system. You could turn off 2 or 4 cylinders of the V8 to save fuel. It didn't work very well and wasn't as fuel efficient as it was supposed to be.

    I remember that..TOTAL disaster!!!

One of those ideas that sounded good on paper but crashed and burned in the real world. Kinda like trying to convert an Olds gas V8 into a diesel. And let's not forget another marvel of engineering from Cadillac....the Northstar.
