The longer these negotiations are delayed the more Ukrainians will suffer and die. Their cities and infrastructure will continue to be pounded into rubble.

Immigrant advocates plan summer of protests, hoping to close NJ detention center for good
Over a dozen organizations are planning a series of protests in front of the Elizabeth Contract Detention Facility and appearances elsewhere to see that the facility doesn't avoid an August deadline set by state law to end its partnership with ICE.
The advocates want all detainees in the facility set free. They also want to get the attention of elected officials on the local, state and federal levels to end the jailing of undocumented immigrants nationwide.

At least 22 police officers were injured Saturday in unrest in the western German town of Giessen during an Eritrean cultural festival, according to local police.
Police in the German state of Hessen said there were “massive attacks” against their officers early Saturday morning, with demonstrators “throwing stones and bottles and setting off smoke bombs” and attempting “to break through police barriers” into the event site.
“The police had to use pepper spray and batons,” Hessen police said in a statement, adding that there were “severe traffic problems in the area” and that there was also damage to cars.

Man arrested in mass shooting at Wichita nightclub released without charges
Police had previously said Young was a security guard in part of popular rapper Mozzy’s entourage. Chief Joseph Sullivan, who is having the club’s entertainment and liquor license suspended for 30 days starting Saturday, said the club didn’t want Mozzy or his entourage.
The nine shooting victims ranged from single to multiple gunshot wounds and from minor to critical but non-life-threatening injuries.
The victims include seven men, ages 22 to 34, and two women, ages 22 and 24. Police have said they think at least four guns were used during the incident and four guns were found. Police would not say where the guns were found.

California should eliminate interest on child support debt for black residents, the state’s Reparations Task Force has recommended.
It has also called for a ban on police arresting people for minor public order offences, including public urination.

Wichita man sentenced for sexually assaulting women after offering them rides
A Wichita man has been ordered to serve seven years, one month in prison for sexually assaulting two women that he picked up around 11th and Broadway in 2021 and 2022, according to a news release from the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
Marlon B. Montoya, 41, pleaded guilty on April 6 to two counts of aggravated sexual battery, court records show. Authorities say he offered rides to the victims and assaulted them after they got into his car.

However, two days later on April 21 in Palm Springs, California, the migrant and his family checked in for a flight to Tampa, Florida, at which point the FBI obtained additional information from TSA and found he was a positive watch list match and informed Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who then contacted the ICE subsidiary office in Tampa. The migrant missed the flight to California, but rebooked a flight to Florida the next day, the report says. He was later picked up by ICE in Florida on May 6.

We wanted to be free, they wanted our lives. Nonviolent resistance during the civil rights era resulted in beatings, church bombings and resentment even in the liberal North. They didn’t oppose our quest for equality, they opposed us. When Black voters elected Black politicians during Reconstruction, whites didn’t just want to take our voting rights, they killed the people we elected. They were not protecting their power; they wanted to take ours. Black financial gains weren’t met with “economic anxiety,” it was bombed and burned from existence. Segregationists didn’t create massive resistance, segregation academies and decimate the population of Black teachers because they wanted whites-only schools. They spat on our children and bombed them in churches because they wanted Black taxpayers to continue funding their children’s educational advantages. The conservatives who believe affirmative action is anti-white also want to end the Department of Education. Perhaps, instead of defending our rights and fighting for white people to treat us as equals, we should culturally appropriate their proven strategy.

8-Year-Old Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Car at Gunpoint
The New York Post noted there were no injuries in the accident that resulted in the eight-year-old’s arrest and that a gun was recovered at the scene.

Around 7 a.m. one day last August, the first migrants sent to New York City by the governor of Texas arrived with little warning on a bus, and walked sleepily into their new lives.
They joined others who moved into shelters, then hotels, then white tents on an island in the East River and, as more came, into empty office buildings and school gyms. They enrolled their children in nearby schools, ate boxed meals served by the city, and clothed themselves in castoff pants and shirts donated by volunteers.

“Reparations for Slavery? California’s Bad Idea Catches On,” commentator Jason L Riley wrote in the Wall Street Journal, as New York approved a commission to study the idea. In the Washington Post, conservative columnist George F Will said the state’s debate around reparations adds to a “plague of solemn silliness”.
Roughly two-thirds of Americans oppose the idea of reparations, according to 2021 polling from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and 2022 polling from the Pew Research Center. Both found that more than 80% Black respondents support some kind of compensation for the descendants of slaves, while a similar majority of white respondents opposed.

The plan, which was inspired by a “struggle rooted in black liberation,” contains no recommendations to increase enforcement of crimes. Instead, it proposes getting rid of a gang database because of “racial disparities,” issuing an acknowledgment of harm toward black and Hispanic residents of the city, “re-envision[ing] the role of a police officer,” and providing mental health services — rather than actual safety — in communities that are “over-policed.”
