Did you see the footage of the Aricebo Dish collapse?

One of the largest Radio Telescope (or listening devices) in the world (as seen in the movies GoldenEye and Contact) suffered a catastrophic collapse due to corrosion by some of the support cables. Yikes.

Isn't the dish, itself, embedded in the ground beneath the part that collapsed?

Basically, yes. The dish was immovable but not actually on the "ground" as they had to allow room for maintenance vehicles and people to get underneath the dish. The actual receiver, the part that fell, was described in some articles as weighing 900 TONS !!
The facility was also 57 years old, has survived multiple hurricanes, earthquakes, constant humidity, salt air, etc.
There was an article 3-4 days ago that the ChiComs now have a similar facility but the dish is about 3,000 feet in diameter (0.91 km).

Actually it was well made. They completely expected the collapse due to corrosion. This structure was nearly 60 years old, almost ten years PAST it's service life and collapse was expected if they didn't replace the entire upper structure which would have cost $334 Million . The surprise was that it happened in 2020. The experts expected the collapse in a few years.

They're rebuilding it. The tech was old. They're going to use NEW tech in the new dish.
