I could do a submarine much easier than I could ever fly.

Flying is actually easy... as easy as driving. Airplanes, I mean. Helicopters are a whole 'nuther thing.

It's not the "as easy as driving" part that concerns me. I like driving because when the car breaks down, it doesn't really fall anywhere and you can get out and walk away. When they build an airplane that when it breaks down while flying, it'll stop and wait for someone to fly up and fix it, then I'll consider flying.... Until then, I think I'll stick with either a car, truck,. motorcycle, bicycle, canoe, kayak, or boat. (And, yes, I can swim....)

And, I do admire the people who fly, but I don't envy them at all.

Actually flying is really not as easy as driving, although once you get off the ground there are not many things to easily run into. Remember, take off is optional, landing is mandatory. Also like alismith said, if your aircraft engine hickups, it really isn't the easiest thing finding a safe place to pull over and call AAA.

As a pilot, only a couple of things better than taking a bird up and enjoying the temporary freedom.

Submarine? I could never do subs. Doesn't matter if you can swim. If you're trapped 1500 Meters below the surface, swimming ain't gonna save you. I'l claustrophobic. I got jump wings in early 20s. Now that I'm an old fart, I can barely stand on a tall ladder, but that's mostly because of leg weakness and worsening agility.

Even at my young age, I would NEVER do submarines.

I wasn't talking about swimming out of a sub. I was talking about water crafts that stay on top of the water.

However, I don't have claustrophobia at all. Being in tight or small places doesn't bother me. Now, heights really bother me.... Can't do heights.

i've got claustrophobia like most can't imagine. going under my house is scary. i can hardly crawl under a culvert to the other side. a submarine, nope. as a side note, i had the priviledge of getting to help test the engines in those planes. awesome.

I guess I am somewhat claustraphobic. squirming through a small pipe or moving through something so small that I have to articulate my body carefully a certain way to get through is a no go for me.

a small space like a closet or under a bed or something is fine.

If engine(s) quit, you immediately keep close tabs on your altitude and airspeed and glide to a landing. Now, if you're over water, mountains or a dense city, then you've got what's known as a BIG PROBLEM.

Of course this assumes there is a nice open field within gliding distance and you have enough altitude to get there, and there are no powerlines across it, and no ruts, rocks or misc. holes in the ground, or trees for as far as you can see. Or it is daylight and you can see the ground around you to make a quick decision on an emergency landing spot.

Something like a 747 does present a rather large problem in trying to find a place to glide it down to if no airport is around or you don't have enough altitude to make it there.

Like I said, I'll stick to ground or water travel modes. I'm not in that much of a hurry to get to a destination in a matter of hours when I can drive and take in the sights and stop and explore a little on the way.

90% of going to a destination is the ride getting there. There's always something to see, or do, along the way...

Flying as a passenger is like a taxi ride with a better view. FLYING the airplane yourself is an unforgettable experience... and it never gets boring... especially when learning the importance of maintaining airspeed and stall/spin recovery at the same time. THAT is also unforgettable... in a brown skidmarked underwear kind of way.
