I climbed up to the 535 foot level of a 1000 foot tall tower of a UHF TV station transmitter in the late 1970's to work on an antenna for our radio club's 2 meter repeater. The tower is a triangular truss design with a ladder inside. And, it's braced with guy wires. Being inside the tower is an interesting experience. It sways in the wind and it has several bending modes. The guy wires also howl, and with different KINDS of howling depending on wind direction and speed. Climbing up 535 feet while wearing a backpack filled with about 20 pounds of tools and parts was a real workout, even for the young, healthy kid I used to be! One thing I regret... WHY did I never take a camera up there? The view was absolutely incredible!

I had a buddy who worked as a photographer for the SF Chronicle. He got a gig taking photos from the TOP of one of the TOWERS of the Golden Gate Bridge. Even though you're harnessed and hooked in for safety, you're STILL OUTSIDE on the top of the tower looking DOWN at the cars on the bridge and then another 245 feet to the water. He said "Hey you wanna go and help me with gear?" Normally I would say yes, but I couldn't go through with it. About half way up I say, NO WAY and went down again.

Yes. I watched it all the way to the end. There's a big difference watching something and doing something.

Three points:

1) It was a lot easier with the cloud cover. Not being able to see the ground made it a little easier to watch; and,

2) They could offer me enough money to make me the richest person in the world, and I still wouldn't do that; and,

3) Thanks for the future nightmares.....

Years ago, when I was still in high school, a friend of my uncle's would come down to deer hunt. He was a full blooded American Indian. His job was maintenance and painter on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (a suspension bridge that connects the Eastern Shore with the Western part of the state). He would run up the side bundle of cables to get to the top. He never used a harness to get there nor did he use one once he got up there (even though the union said he had to). He told me that if you needed a harness to work that high up, then you didn't belong up there in the first place.

Obviously, I didn't belong there....

Weevil - there is something I have wondered for some time. When you post pictures like this and use those "IMG" tags, all I see is a blank post. I have to click on "Post a Quick Reply" before I see anything. Then I have to highlight between the IMG tags and "Open in a New Window" to view it.
There are a few I have posted in the Roadhouse but I also have a gallery at Hobby Tent (http://hobbytent.com/index.php?cat=10003) but the ones of Bettie I posted there are the less risque ones of the 60+ that I have currently.

At first, I saw a guy running, then after looking a little closer at him, I saw the dog. Now, it's hard seeing the guy and not the dog.
