After today, it's all historical.
It's nice to see articles on shooting BP firearms. There are a lot of shortcuts (all safe) he didn't mention, but he's just starting out in this type of shooting. He'll learn if he keeps shooting BP.
One thing anyone could do if they can't find any percussion caps, is go to the local Dollar General or Dollar Tree, maybe even Walmart, and buy the type of toy gun caps that come in little plastic rings (usually they're yellow or red colored plastic, 8-10 on a ring). These are easy to cut off by using a razor blade to separate them.
Once separated, they are now ready to put on the gun's nipples and shoot. Just check before placing them on that they have the cap compound in them. Some of them come from the factory "unloaded." Push them firmly into place and you're good to go. You might have to use a small screwdriver or knife to pry them off the nipple after they fire. They do stick on pretty tightly.
So far, when I tried them, they all worked perfectly. No squibs and no misfires.
The really good thing about them is they are still plentiful when you find a store that carries them.
