As a kid I road a bike without a helmet in the suburbs of New York City. I played with cap guns and BB guns without parental supervision, in those suburbs of NYC.
I sat in the rear facing third row seat on my dad's 1957 Ford Country Squire station wagon without seatbelts!

Went to an estate sale in Throckmorton several years ago and got one along with a bunch of Atari game cartridges (no console, just the games).
Batteries had corroded but it worked after cleaning it up and the box was in decent shape.
Sold on-line along the the cartridges and made a decent profit.
It's surprising what you can find when they clean out an old house - and how much people will pay for some of it.

Also when I was a kid it wasn't unusual to see gun racks with shotguns and/or rifles in the rear windows of pickup trucks parked in the school parking lots.
Hell, we had an ROTC chapter at my high school...several racks of M14s in a caged off space and they took us out to the police rifle range to shoot them.

when i was a kid, gas was $.25 a gallon and an adult could order a firearm from a mail order catalog.
And, on Saturday night, dad would give me 30 cents for the movies. That would be enough for the ticket, a coke, and a bag of popcorn. If I had an extra 10 cents, I could get two candy bars.
