    An interesting article.
    Many of those recipes I remember from my childhood in the '50s & '60s. And I still love "beans & franks". And although it has been YEARS, I remember homemade potato pancakes using leftover mashed potatoes.
    We also made something we called "caboose potatoes". Peeled, cleaned, and dried potatoes were sliced thinly then cooked in a skillet with a little bacon grease. We had to be careful to avoid burning them but they made a nice filling addition to a kids meal.
    Haven't heard of the peanut butter bread, the wacky chocolate cake, or the water pie, but those were really before my time.
