I think I'd call this guy the Ace of Aces. He had 352 confirmed kills while the Red Baron had 80 confirmed kills. However, von Richthofen was the ace of WWI while this kid was the ace of WWII.

Well yeah but the Red Baron didn't have waves of bombers to shoot down....the pickings were a lot slimmer in his day.
A hundred years later people still remember the Red Baron and even name pizzas after him...who remembers Erich Hartmann???
He has numbers on his side but the Red Baron is a legend who is remembered to this day.

You're right in that Hartmann isn't a known name and, as far as I know, there aren't many fast food items named after him, either.
What really made the Red Baron famous, though, was his sorties with Snoopy. Snoopy knew better than to go against Hartmann. Snoopy was smart in that respect....

I think that bright red Fokker tri-plane had a little something to do with it too....that is one of the most iconic planes in aviation history.
Honestly it has more to do with the legend of the Red Baron than the pilot himself.....having a gray camo-ed BF109 shooting up Snoopy's doghouse just wouldn't have the same visual impact.

Yup, you're right. The legend was greater than the man, but he was still worthy of that legend....and the red tri-plane definitely helped...

Yup, you're right. The legend was greater than the man, but he was still worthy of that legend....and the red tri-plane definitely helped...
You gotta admire the bravado of the man to fly a bright red plane that just screams "COME GET SOME!".....and he does take a great pic with those steely eyes and that Blue Max staring out at you.

His whole squadron flew planes painted in bright colors, that's why they were called the flying circus.
