8 Ways Cotton Can Actually Help You in a Survival Situation

Many of the techniques mentioned in this article are one I learned over 50 years ago in Boy Scouts.
As an alternative to cotton balls, you can also use dryer lint, particularly as either a firestarter or as a substitute wick. I use the lint in the paper egg cartons and dribble paraffin over them and cut the individual pits apart for the firestarters. They are firm and dry and won't "leak" oil. They are harder to start however but will also burn longer than an oil-soaked cotton ball.
