Always thought Enemy Mine was underrated, you know, speaking as a scifi nerd.

I agree with both posts, wasn't a big fan of iron eagles, but he was in other stuff and always a good actor.
I can't think of a single movie I saw Louis in that I didn't like, or that I didn't like him in.
Speaking of Enemy Mine...CC and I got a Lilac Point Siamese cat a few years ago and she agreed to let me name him. Got him from a rescue we volunteer for on Saturdays (we set up in a local PetSmart for several hours each week) and so I'm sitting outside having a smoke, pondering a name, and suddenly it popped into my frond...the sound of Louis Gossett as his alien character from Enemy Mine telling Dennis Quaid what his child's name should be...Zamish!
Found out after the fact when I IMDB'd the movie that it was actually Zammis...but hey, close enough for cat naming purposes.

But I have never watched Roots but enjoyed "An Officer and a Gentleman" very much. The '80s decade was good for him.
And don't forget - (one sci-fi nerd to another) - he was on Stargate SG-1 as the jaffa that became an Ouri minion.

He was excellent in Roots, you must watch the miniseries, you won't be disappointed.
