Policy change will allow passengers to bring unloaded guns on trains

By TONY BIZJAK - McClatchy Newspapers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Reversing a near decade-long ban, Amtrak will allow passengers to bring guns on most trains starting next month.

The change, pushed by gun-rights advocates and ordered by Congress, aligns Amtrak's firearm policy with air travel rules that allow unloaded guns to be stored in locked baggage holds.

That is great news. I didn't know what amtrack's policy was but, I had wondered. I like riding trains but would be rather unhappy if I couldn't have my gun with me when I reached my destination.

Lift on Amtrak gun ban won’t apply to Oklahoma

Amtrak began allowing unloaded guns on its trains last week, but the Heartland Flyer in Oklahoma is an exception because it doesn’t have checked baggage service.

Amtrak recently lifted its post-9/11 ban on packing unloaded firearms in checked luggage on its trains. But unless checked baggage service is added to the only Amtrak run in Oklahoma, the change won’t apply here.

Lift on Amtrak gun ban won’t apply to Oklahoma Amtrak was required to lift the ban because of a measure added to an appropriations bill in the U.S. Senate in December 2009.
