Virtually all states have a state bird, a state flower and a state motto. But Utah soon could be among the first to have an official state firearm — the Browning model 1911 .45-caliber handgun, designed by Utah gunmaker John Moses Browning.

Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman — a former police officer, a life member of the National Rifle Association and an instructor for concealed weapons classes — wants to take a shot at creating that designation when the Legislature convenes next month. At least one anti-gun-violence group bemoans the move but sees no real harm.

That would almost make me move to UT so I could get a license plate with that logo. Then I would drive to Chicago just to piss 'em off.

Next step is to make 1911's tax free in Utah and require every qualified house hold to own at least one.

Shit, they coulda gone with just about anything. Winchester lever gun, Winchester 1897 shottie, 1919, M2. The list of stuff John Moses Browning (peace be upon him) patented and brought to market is simply staggering. Maybe Utah can do a whole JMB theme on their license plates, eh?
How do you compromise with someone when their idea of compromise is to give them what THEY want?

Well if we are going to get a state gun at least they picked well. Personally I think the legeslature could and should do better things with their time. However they are a bunch of idiots so this will probably keep them from messing some other important thing up.

This, and a few other excelllent actions by the State Legislature over the past few years gives me cause to believe there's hope left. I was beginning to think the state was lost to the libz that populate the bigger metro areas, but maybe people are waking up to reality.

There's plenty of jobs and houses for sale if you want to leave your crappy states and come here.

I just hope Maryland doesn't do this. I would hate to be from a state whose state firearm is a hand-pumped, single-shot, Nerfball shotgun.

Couldn't think of a better choice for a state firearm. Everyone should own at least one M1911 (not bubba'd).

Add this to Utah's list of state symbols: an official firearm

    By Michael Martinez, CNN
    March 19, 2011 1:17 a.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Until this week, Utah had 24 state symbols, from tree (the blue spruce) to insect (the honeybee) to even cooking pot (the Dutch oven).

Now it's added an official state firearm -- the John M. Browning-designed M1911 pistol, becoming the first state in the nation to have one, according to the state legislator who sponsored the law.
