Give some finer details... barrel length, muzbrk, magmod ? Was the front sight reused or new? Its a sweet looking 308AK for sure, I hope its everything you expect and more. For me I can't bring myself to come off the original woody sporter set up.

    Interesting look to that VEPR!

Now we need a range report to validate all that money spend making it look tacti-cool.

The rifle started out with a 20.5 barrel.I bought this a few years ago from mriddick when it was the old Gunsnet. He let me make payments until I paid it off.For that he gets a A+++++ in my book.He bought already converted to take unmodified M14 mags.Krebs did the conversion originally.

I sent it to Hector of Elk River to cut the barrel to 13.25",crown,thread,move the original FSB back, and permanently attach the Yankee Hill 7.62 threaded flash hider.Ultimak lower and upper.Tapco SAW grip.I still have the Vepr hand guard and gas tube if I decide the Ultimak is too much.I did some part swapping for the Ultimak parts, the YHM FH was on sale 2 years ago for 30 bucks. All the add on doodads cost under a 100 bucks total.I have more money in mags than add ons.

I'm expecting the shorter barrel to be more rigid and expect some tighter shooting with some loss in velocity. As long as it shoots like it did before I won't be upset at all.I was able to get 2" groups at 100 yards open sights with South African and Argentine surplus.I did have a scope on this once but it was the Russian type and the groups were about 1.5" same ammo.I want to try some of my handloads and play with it.This rifle always performed better than the Saiga-308s I have owned.

Been sitting on this project for about 2 years and finally made it happen.Gets a lot of attention at the range. Most folks do not bother when I out there with everyday stuff. But when they see this rifle they stop and ask "Are those M14 mags","Is that an AK"?Then the conversation starts.

Interesting yes,money....It is only money.Brings me joy.Not like it is a rare PolyTech or Double folder....Do that to one of those would be sacrilege.

Once I get it back,I will take it out for a full range test. Then a full range report and better pics to be sure.Once the test are done some Krylon tan and od green paint I will call it complete.

    Thumbs up

It looks nice but .... your cut down of the barrel is really going to suck the speed and energy out of the 7.62 NATO round. You will probably find that you've lost 50 fps / inch of barrel cut off. I'd estimate about 350 fps give or take 25 fps lost. That should put your bullets right at 2400 fps creating a 7.62x39 mangum of sorts.

That was fully considered.I figured 300 yards maximum distance for this carbine now.

    Hey AKTexas
Which ultimak lower rail did you use for this? I just picked up a used vepr k 223 and would like to have a rail for a sling mount and bipod. Is this rail rigid, ie no movement?
Does it screw in place just like the vepr handguard?

I opted for the long version,it does mount using the original Vepr mount..Very rigid and solid.I'm ordering a Vortex red dot to try on the upper gas tube.I may go with a side mount later on and maybe a 4 power scope.

Have you looked at the tws dogleg rail? I have one on my vepr 7.62x39 and think it kicks ass. It comes with a peep sight but mostly I use a bushnell trs-25 red dot on it. I have not tried a scope on it but I would think that would work fine also.

The Gen II is still in beta testing.Once all things are final on the TWS I might look into it if it will fit the Vepr-308.
