ST. PETERSBURG —- The director at the Midtown Youth Center found something strange Wednesday in the men's bathroom.
Lying atop a toilet was a 9mm semiautomatic handgun.
The director, Anthony Hart, began looking around. He eventually came across Patrick Eugene Ricketts, who was sitting outside.
Ricketts, 26, of St. Petersburg, had recently dropped off a friend. When Hart asked if he knew anything about the gun, Ricketts acknowledged the weapon was his. He said he had forgotten it in the restroom.
Hart called police, who discovered the 9mm wasn't the only gun on the center's property at 1201 22nd St, S.
Authorities say Ricketts, who has no previous criminal history in Florida, had three other guns in his possession, which he is licensed to carry.
Officers found a Ruger pistol in his left pocket, and two other handguns in his car, said police spokesman Mike Puetz. They also discovered marijuana, scales, and a ski mask, he said.
Puetz said officers don't believe Ricketts intended to do anything nefarious, and appeared to be under the influence of some substance.
Detectives later learned he had a prescription for medication that causes sedation.
Puetz also said Ricketts told officers he was into "self protection" and wanted to have a backup gun in case one was stolen.
